So Vegas doesn't have too many options to make room for Eichel (who skated without a non-contact jersey yesterday); looks like Dadonov (another year left at $5 mil) and Smith (expiring contract) will be moved.

Id throw Karlsson into the list. I think Dadonov and Karlsson would headline the list of people theyd trade. Smith plays so well with them theres no incentive to trade him.

But I think that cap goes back to normal after the deadline is over… I dont think we get to keep it til the playoffs.
- aecliptic

FWIW, it's a daily cap, which is why the 35 number exists. You also only absorb the prorated cat hit for the remainder of the season. So if you trade for a 10 million cap hit and 20% of the season is left, effectively said player only has a 2 million cap hit for you.

There's also no cap in the playoffs

I think Dadonov has some value, but I think Vegas problem will be they have to find someone to want those guys. They may not be willing to trade Smith, but way more teams would line up for him.

Karlsson is signed in perpetuity. I know he's a center, but that's a hard sell, and Vegas is in no position to retain salary. Marchessault is signed for another 3 years.

the moves Vegas makes to get Eichel in are the first dominoes to get the trades rollin

This is probably why were not seeing any moves yet. If we trade now we have to absorb the full cost against the cap.

Well just a bigger prorated portion, but your point still holds. It behooves teams to wait as long as possible for cap reasons

Larry Brooks in Post Sports+ today:
Here is what I recommend, and I recommend doing it now: Offer Nils Lundkvist and Filip Chytil to the Canucks for J.T. Miller, whom the Rangers would have for two playoff runs before he becomes a 2023 free agent. He could anchor what would become an extremely formidable third line the rest of this season or he could take one of the right-wing spots in the top six. And he would represent protection were either Mika Zibanejad or Ryan Strome to go down with an injury. And he would be in position to replace Strome next year if No. 16 and the Blueshirts cannot agree on an extension.

It depends on when they want Eichel to begin playing. I'm sure he's not in game shape yet and won't be for awhile. They probably realize they don't need him to get into the playoffs, so I wonder if they send him to the AHL for a long conditioning stint.
Alec Martinez is the other guy they have to get healthy.

There's approximately zero chance Vancouver agrees to that

He's been practicing for a month now and is now in a non contact jersey, he's in game shape. The only issue would be how long Vegas needs to game the system.

I think if Eichel was sent to the AHL on a conditioning stint he'd still have to count against the cap

Practice doesn't get you into game shape unless they're bag-skating him.

It may not be that far off though. Maybe add another piece like a Robertson/Cuylle.

Us fans tend to undervalue our own players and overvalue target players. It happens every year.

Every player is different and Eichel had been out a bit longer, but on a similar time table, Malkin hit the ground running.

I dont give a flying (frank) when Eichel starts actually playing, I want him counting against their cap

I'm sure Chytil still has some value since he's so young, but I'm not sure he moves the needle nearly as much in a trade as he would a couple seasons ago. He's played enough games where I think teams know he can improve a bit, but they have a gauge of what type of player he is.

I think what we'd have to add would depend more on what Vancouver thought of Nils, I honestly think the team might have to add either a 1st or value that would be equal to a 1st in addition. J.T. has been a ppg player for them and still has a year left. If they don't get what they want, they can just sit on their hands and deal him at the draft or next season's deadline.

Agreed
Minimum addition of a 1st Rd pick is going to be required and maybe Kravstov...

Nope!

What Ive been doing/seeing is 1st rd pick, Lundkvist, Chytil and Skinner for Miller. However, we really need VAN to retain like 1.5m.

Personally, Id rather go the Copp route because I firmly believe we can resign him without losing or affecting any part of the core.

Can't imagine he's on a 2-way contract either.
Imagine if they tried to send him down and we claim him off waivers!!

Remember the team we are fans of.... 100% chance somehow it's the Flyers or Devils that claim him and his neck is never a concern and they win multiple cups with him. When you sign up for this team, you sign up for a life of misery.

Slightly off topic but totally in the theme of the post, the other day my almost 5 yr old son asked me when we were going back to see "the team with the big apple", kid if you know what's good for you, you'll stay far away.

CBA allows up to a 14-day conditioning loan (with the player's approval), but he does count against the cap if they were to go that route. No waivers necessary.

I don't think Malkin has ever run a day in his life.
