Stastically speaking it is not...

Okay, getting down to the fine print.

I've been to Canada's largest city. Toronto. I can say, obviously, I saw a lot of Asians. I believe that's Canada's largest minority group. I saw some blacks.

But if I were to sit here and tell you I saw that diversity in action, well, I'd be a liar. Comparatively, I have been to Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Rochester, Detroit, Cleveland.... And believe me, American cities are MUCH more diverse than Canadian cities. Plain and simple.

Canada likes to pretend it's not segregated like America, but a lot of times, it's more segregated. Sure, highest standard of living or something.

You need to read a book my guy.

America is like middle of the pack in diversity of countries.

Canada is the only western country in the top 20 of diverse countries in the world.

- DirtyDan

Any book? Cool. I didn't know I could learn about Canadian diversity in literally any book.

You mean black guys.

Being dead serious. The NHL is not ready for their personalities. Absolutely are not going to make an African-American anything close to the "face" of their game.

Because the "face" of their game is "white". They are the one major sport (and really the onyl sport I can think of) that has managed to stay a significantly white, upper-middle class sport (we're talking 90% Caucasian employees). And believe me, they are well aware and intend to keep it that way. They make more money off of talking about Willy O Ree and diversity than they do off of actually being diverse.

There's so much gatekeeping in hockey I'm surprised anyone enjoys it at any level anymore. And this is coming from a guy who thinks the NFL is a modern-day plantation system. And manages to still enjoy it.

I am just so sick to death about talking about diversity in America, and America being a melting pot. Yeah no, it's segregated and 75% white. It's all in the same pan but it ain't melting.

The NHL is probably the most old-fashioned, old-school, ruled by the old-guard major sport in the world at this point; The fact that the game is an absolute joy to play and watch when you can follow and understand it is the only reason it's still so popular. Because the league is run by gate-keepers who have allowed systematic abuse, rape and hazing to it's pee-wee and junior players, and it's managed to become a problem from the bottom to the top. They breed their players worse than the NFL does theirs.

The MLB and NBA just sit and wait for good players to come to them. MLB is terrible at marketing it's stars but it's a sport that probably literally could still be successful without any advertising. NBA, well, just let the kids play on the playground, more or less. They are more merit based and individualistic sports - Good players are rewarded. The NFL and NHL for some reason like to psychologically (frank) with their players and keep them in a constant state of PTSD, unless they're Tom Brady because he's clearly been blowing Goodell for two decades.

The NHL also has not accepted black players like the other major sports have. You have a mostly European and Canadian player-base, and those countries are a hell of a lot less diverse than America, so they plain and simple are not used to African-Americans, and let me tell you, having worked with a lot of African-Americans as well as a lot of Africans over the years, they are not even close to being the same people, or having the same culture. African immigrants in European countries and American countries alike have not been able to form their own unique culture within their new societies like African-Americans have.

A bunch of farmer boys and tundra men from Scandinavia and Saskatchewan (wow I actually did type and spell that right in one try) are not used to such a large minority group with such a loud voice, and I am actually suggesting they gate-keep the sport to such a degree as to prevent it from becoming more diverse, on top of it being one of the most expensive sports already.

I know plenty of youth football programs that provide equipment to underprivileged players, likewise for basketball and baseball, albeit those sports are cheaper in that regard. I cannot think of a single youth hockey program that provides equipment to underprivileged players. In fact, I experienced quite a bit of bullying and "go buy your own pads" playing youth hockey. I mean. Teams would literally rather play with an empty net and 6 players than let me suit up in their extra goalie pads because I volunteered to play goalie after BOTH of the goalies decided they wanted to be goal-scorers this season... I mean seriously try getting someone to use their ball in roller hockey or floor hockey, you would think those things are made of diamonds.

It's just not a very welcoming sport. It's the only sport I ever got bullied in for being good at. It's the only sport I ever got bullied in for simply wanting to play it. It's a frat-house culture and after the past decade of Sabres hockey, the sport itself has done nothing to keep me interested.

If it weren't for Ovechkin and a (very) few other stars, I wouldn't even casually follow. It's a horribly marketed, gate-kept sport of men shaking hands and patting each other on the back as the youth children bob for apples in a bathtub full of feces and urine and semen as a coach sodomizes them with a goalie stick. I mean, FFS, the Chicago Blackhawks had a coach literally rape a guy and they REFUSE to talk about it.

Yes that stuff happens.

No, "non-Hispanic white"

"White" is an identity. 15% of Hispanic people in America identify as "white" on the census, driving that number up to around 75%.

Please tell me why Hispanic and Latinos identify with "white".

Hint: You don't have to.

Does it matter? Multiple players have said it. And those players, having been descended from those plantation systems, probably have a bigger voice in it than we do. Just saying.

Hank pointed out, more NCAA than NFL but it's all a part of the same system. Pee-wee, youth, grade school, NCAA and up, these players are bred for it, and with a 75% African-American player base in a country that's 75% white, well, you tell me what's going on?

- BeadyEyedDouche

The CIA has been altering the genetics of groceries in stores of majority white areas which has physical repercussions specifically young white men, check out this example:

The government instituted a program in 1946 called minimize the beadys and it concluded it was morally obligated to scale this plan throughout the country resulting in the dramatic differences

So blame the CIA for small white non athletic men

"Diverse" doesn't mean anything when it's segregated. Diverse on paper doesn't mean diverse in action.

Toronto may have more people from more different area, but in a room of 100 people, if every one of them is different, sure that's diversity. If 90 of them are white and the remaining 10 are each from a different country or ethnicity, that shows up as "diverse". It's a "diverse" gathering of people.

Yeah, it's not like that in America. A room of 100 people might have 50 whites, a smaller number of blacks, and a bunch of other minorities and ethnicities.

Having a token character from each demographic does not make you diverse.

I blame whites for this.

But also, I'm going to pump the brakes here, because a lot of people really don't understand chattel slavery, the plantation system and it's complexity within shaping American culture and economics.

Again, having a token person from each demographic does not mean you are diverse. Diversity needs to be seen, in action. I need these people to interact.

Canada is a very segregated, racist society just like the United States. The fact they act like it's some post-racial paradise is mind-blowing.

Among numerous misteps, the NHL are second class citizens to the other big 3. The salary cap is the only proof you need. The best player since Gretzky gets paid the same money as a great, not elite, cornerback. He gets paid 10% of a top MLB slugger or pitcher. He's not even within the top 100 celeries in the NBA.

And a lot of that has to do with marketing in general. Kids and young adults want to like guys. They want them to speak to them, per se. Go find someone in your life that doesn't like the NHL. Ask them to name 3 active players. Good luck.

They're (frank)ing boring milquetoast. Anyone with any semblance of personality is deemed a cancer. you want to grow the game, you need to market the players. And no one gets excited by normal (frank)ing cheerios.
