Face of the league - gerbe75pts
Until Eichel tears it up and the Vegas pr team puts his cured acne face on the side of the Mirage

There are players that have tried. PK Subban comes to mind. The league desperately needs one of its best players not only accept the spotlight, but embrace it. As much as it makes me roll my eyes, "branding" is important. - buffalofan19
but when PK did try a lot of people just called him a douche |

Rivers and Petey touch on this on one of their episodes. It was a while ago so unfortunately I can't reference it. Essentially PK came into that room and the vets weren't very keen on how boisterous he was. Most of these guys are shut up and play and answer the questions you're asked.
That's a mentality that has long ago left the NFL and NBA. Unfortunately the NHL is still stuck in that until you get more guys like PK trying to change the game.

Always seemed like there were more personalities in football, hockey breeds the soft spoken types. Think Tuch and Joker have cool personalities, they just aren't the big personas like that. Wrong sport or something. - QuinnFan
Talent level is a part of it too. Back to my example, the reason Shaq and Barkley are such icons is that they have the personality and they were Hall of Famers. Tuch, while decent, is nowhere near that. The league needs someone at the level of Crosby, McDavid, etc. to shed the "good Canadian boy" label, and do it in a way that doesn't seem out of place and obnoxious.

Start shedding your Don Cherrys and your John Tortorellas and you're well on your way.

It needs to come from the top of the food chain as far as talent goes. Subban is up there in talent, but still not close enough to the top to make a difference.
If Daniel Briere or Chris Drury had Peters' personality, it would go over a lot different, provided the production and results stayed the same.
To your point, though, the problem is that it's generally players with the lowest talent level that have the biggest personalities. That might get you a local cult following, but not much else. The only exception is probably Paul Bissonette. He basically owned the clown reputation and made a big name for himself at Barstool. Without Spittin' Chiclets, there is absolutely no way TNT hires him.

Connor Garland (Ek isn't the first time I've heard this) seems to be available again.
Sabres should be using some assets to get him. He'd be a hell of an add.
Just like the first time he was available. |

Again, it's a combination of talent and personality. Not to say that Subban stinks, but his contract has been closer to a boat anchor than not for a while now. Overall, his personal brand will be more than fine. I believe he already has a job at ESPN lined up. However, as far as marketing the league goes, he's still one or two notches below what the league needs.

It would be funny if the story turned out that wasn't really him but an American lookalike from somewhere like South Carolina who never really watches hockey.

Yea but MLB and NHL have unwritten rules where you are not allowed to celebrate. |
