It's got to bring you comfort that a guy who built a team with two double digit losing streaks in the first half of the season is going to wheel and deal at the deadline and this summer.
- PLindbergh31

So you're saying we got a chance! Seriously, like you i have zero confidence in CF. For a GM to be successful, he needs the other GMs to respect him. I see no mutual respect... I'm thinking others think him the fool.

25% of the season is not much?

Let me ask you this. Would you take Kucherov in a trade? He's a guy with an injury history.

Risto.

Ellis cost was nothing really. Myers and NoPa. Neither was working out. Ellis is signed until 37. If he retires early for whatever reason we arent strapped with the cap hit. If injuries are an issue, we can Kucherov him. However we do need a guy capable of stepping up in case of injury. No one on this roster is capable of stepping in for Provorov or Ellis. That is a huge issue.

I like the Ristolainen trade however I am not ignorant to the fact we overpaid. That being said many other teams were making the same offer, we won because our pick was the earliest.

It will also depend on the youth of those drafts. If the pick ends up being a bust its no harm no foul. That draft wasnt really deep. Buffalo took Isak Rosén. Only time will see.

Who the rangers take after Rosen? He looks pretty good so far

I get a big kick out of talking about other teams that wanted to trade for Ristolainen. Other teams also wanted to be stupid so it's okay that the Flyers were also? The odds of Ellis retiring early or being injured enough to be a long term LTIR candidate are slim to none. Flyers aren't that lucky.
It also doesn't matter who Buffalo took. That does not diminish the value of the picks.

20 games is not that much for a playoff bubble team to be without their top defenseman?

Not buying that Gostisbehere couldn't handle the pressure here.

- MJL

I agree. I believed, and still do, that the problem was more a combo of injuries and AV not understanding how to use him correctly, and it destroyed his confidence.

You are looking at a guy whos performing against teenagers. Many 4th line guys had great amateur seasons. Theres a difference between playing teens and playing against the best men the world has to offer. You also have no guarantee who the Flyers would take. Remember we all thought PHI would take Caulfield?

I like the Briere announcement. I kind of wish the old guard would fall back more and let a Briere actually take the reins.

In 2007, the tandem of Drury + Briere were 2 of the most-sought after FA's. It's interesting years later that both have moved into the front office of their respective teams. The Rangers have already elevated Drury to the head role.

IMO I'd rather have a younger GM - like Briere as opposed to Chuck Fletcher – especially considering how Briere had to really show and prove to be taken seriously as a regular NHL player (drafted in 1996 - didn't play a full season as an NHL regular until the 2001-2002 season). Additionally a player like Briere who's more recently retired aligns more closely (IMO) with today's NHL game which is more comprised of speed and skill than ever.

Chuck Fletcher's resume is less dynamic IMO on top of the fact that was groomed and legacy'd into the league.

The Flyers can't cover what is left on Giroux's deal. Most they can retain is 50%. The idea is for the Flyers to attain picks and prospects. Not to give them up.
- MJL

True, but in this hypothetical scenario if the Flyers wanted Newhook, they would have to give up more than Giroux or any rental. Still Newhook is who I would ask for in a trade.

Usage was fine. He was on the top PP at times and failed to do anything with it. He was also used on the 3rd pair with weaker assignments. His slapshot regressed, he didnt move the puck as well as he did. I can agree with confidence but fans can affect confidence too. Lets not act like he wasnt treated like Matt Carle.

What I am looking at is you downplaying the pick. Give me Otthman over RR all day every day looking at where the flyers are at.

I don't think Frost is competing with Brown. I could see it going down this way.

Brassard activated/ Willman back to the Phantoms.

Brown activated/ Bunnaman back to the Phantoms.

- bmeltzer

still the wrong move, Brown offers very little. Bunnaman actually had a few good games, let him play

That is your counter? What injury history does he have prior to last season?

Is 25% of the season a lot?

He's never played the game, nor has he ever done anything else to really deserve his shot. By all accounts he's a really good dude, but hockey-wise I'm not sure he's held in high esteem by his peers. Daddy's boy, company man, through and through. Flyers really know how to pick 'em.

Gotta say Im really happy to see Brink is leading the NCAA in scoring (tied).

41 points in 26 games in the NCAA is pretty impressive.

edit: Attard 29th in the NCAA and also the highest scoring defenseman.

Arent that Lucky? What are the Odds your starting 4 Cs are all injured at the same time?

What are the odds of busting two 2nd overall picks?

What are the odds of have 2 or more 10 game losing streaks?

If the Flyers didnt have bad luck, they wouldnt have any

One of the very few things that Yeo has done since Vigneault got fired was to allow the defenseman to be more aggressive offensively. Sanheim in particular has benefitted from this. Gostisbehere would've also.

How about this year? 11/46 games. Its not looking good for him going forward. He injured himself the 1st game back in the playoffs in 2020-21

Clearly I was talking about luck in the context of Ellis. The Flyers are likely going to be stuck with a declining player who is in and out of the lineup for 5 more seasons.

Pure speculation....we have no idea what a team is willing to give up. That will be dictated by a large combination of things including...

- What did their closest competitor do? Did they make a power move?
- Have they incurred any injuries or do they want to insulate against injury?
- Do they need Power Play help?
- Are they having challenges winning draws and would like to boost that area?

the board tends to think there is no way a team would give up a blue chip but how much of that may be colored by the Flyers situation and us not being able to fathom a dearth of talent to draw from. Bottom line is there needs to be spots and cap space for blue chips to break in and find space. Sometimes they are ready and the "owning" team is locked into contracts and needs that make it easier to move one. It's not a lock but sitting in the never going to happen camp is just as bad as sitting in the we are going to get a reverse Lindros deal out of this.

Agreed. Plus, in some ways the NCAA is a little closer to the pros because in many cases you are playing against men.
