Oh hey look Brassard injured again. What a farce this franchise is. If every member of this training staff isn’t (frank)ing poop canned after this season open an investigation. What a complete utter poop show with every player being re-injured immediately upon re-entering the lineup. |

The Makar (or Heiskanen, actually) thing is not revisionist hstory. Chris Therien and I were upstairs at the Skate Zone shooting the breeze with a Flyers scout several years ago -- while Patrick was still very much part of the plan here -- and he told us the consensus was that the defensemen were going to be better NHL players at their positions than Patrick as a C. Hexy (and, I guess, Sarge) were homed in on Patrick. But the same scout pointed out that the internal ranking in 2011 had Brodin at the top and that Homer (right after trading Richards and Carter) insisted that it be reconsidered (Couturier then moved to the top). This discussion was after Couturier was coming off a 30 goal season. The scout noted that 2011 worked out great and that Patrick could ultimately justify Hexy's decision.
The only real difference was that Homer involved the scouts (a less favorable description would be "twisted arms") to get another discussion where Couturier being a C got him a little stronger consideration whereas Hexy allegedly just went with his own gut feeling that Patrick's flat-line development between under-age and draft season was solely injury related.
That's what get lost in the whole revisiting of the 2017 Draft. The GM/AGM get the final say, rightfully so. - bmeltzer
Always with some amazing insight and historical perspective. Much appreciated sharing that in response to my post. I don’t recall ever reading that much detail but again, thank you for keeping things real! |

If a capitalist economic system is supposed to effectively find the best ideas and people and allow them to flourish, why does Chuck Fletcher have a job in hockey? - Shrike
Hockey flourish (max chances of winning cup) or business flourish (max revenue for club under boss's dictates)? Hockey is not capitalistic in the former. There are structural barriers. It is fairly capitalistic in the latter (not internally but externally - it is capitalistic like a cartel (like OPEC)).
We sports fans have only two stations on our dial: adulation and flagellation. The station called reflection (as in, can hockey moves be explained based on what the market of us fans have the tolerance for?) is missing. That frequency might provide the best explanation for CF's moves (Hayes/Niskanen/Risto/etc).
Much of the criticism he gets for York/Frost etc is just flagellation. These moves would not even be an issue of the same club was winning.

If we win today do we still want to model our rebuild around Detroit?
I know many wanted to do so after our loss the other night even though no one and I mean no one ever mentioned Detroit as some kind of model to follow in the past.
Again just curious if we do indeed win tonight do we scrap our plan of modeling our rebuild around Detroit? - Joe Nardone
I have been bleating about Detroit 5 times a month for a long time. Check their stadium attendance before Covid. It will give you a clue about why they are able to do the rebuild for as long as they did.

If they could afford to, they probably would not need things like the Millennial Lounge and the Rage Room. |

But this is the essence, what was the nature of the consensus? Was it that each of the Dmen were going to be better? Or one of them (but no consensus within that consensus about which one)? If the former, Hexy overruled his scouts. If the latter, he just perhaps broke a tie.

Hextall wanted to run his own show. Some of the most successful executives in hockey and the business world operate in this same manner. Hextall obviously had confidence in his decision making abilities. He can’t say he got bad info from the scouts who were watching theses kids as it appears they got it right. In his case Hextall made a mistake and he owns that. This was Hextall’s first gig with him fully as the decision maker. I would assume he’s smart enough to know where he went wrong in his days as the GM and probably operates some what differently in his new role in Pitt. - landros 2
Correct. For example, Elon Musk and Steve Jobs. But the thing is, usually, success precedes such insularity (the arrogance is earned). JEarly on in their careers: Jobs was fired from Apple and Musk was fired as CEO of PayPal.
The basic difference here is that Hexy seems to have been given unearned rope. That suggests institutional flaws in the upper echelons of Flyers decision making. |
