I highly doubt it would have any kind of negative effect. He was always a work your ass off kind of leader and not the big personality guy. His agent also publically said he'd like to come back.

Some kind of deal around Gawdin or Phillips would make sense. Neither really fits on the Flames if Gaudreau and Tkachuk stick around and Seattle needs a talent injection.

The biggest problem is that all of the six deserve to keep playing every night. It would probably shift Kylington to eating popcorn if everyone is healthy.

I've said since day 1 there won't be a "C" this year. And it seems pretty obvious now that was the right decision. (If anyone should get a "C" it should be Sutter.)
Flames have a reputation for supporting their players - sometimes maybe to a fault. If they see a place for Gio past retirement then I think they would definitely do what it takes to give him a chance to win the Cup. And I'm sure they would do it in a way that the current players are not negatively affected by it.
Sutter and Tre are starting to look like a legitimate Dynamic Duo. How about consideration for coach and GM of the year?

Split these 5 on 5 and it gets worse for the two names at the top:

Both McDavid and Drai have relied on the powerplay to fuel their scoring rates this year. They both have 26 points on the man advantage, Johnny by contrast has 11.

Also factoring that he plays 3-4 minutes less per game and you can start to see why the Oilers have problems when McDavid and Drai get shut down. Splitting them up was the best decision their head coach has made and that could change their fortunes in a big big way this year.
