Do you think Benning intentionally drafted Boeser, Hughes, Petey, Demko because he wanted to lose games for his entire tenure?
Rutherford has said there are a lot of good players here. Those words don't seem to translate to your thinking of what Jim did. - manvanfan
I have never said he only made bad picks, or he chose poopty players. You're skirting everything I'm saying.
Even in what you quoted I said he made good picks along with bad picks. He "set the future up" through his ineptitude: those high picks weren't because he understood and aimed to tank to build a foundation. They were because he built bad teams that sunk in the standings. It wasn't his intention to draft in those positions, but he choose some good players in those positions.
"Do you think Benning intentionally drafted Boeser, Hughes, Petey, Demko because he wanted to lose games for his entire tenure?"
No, his mandated was to win (as expressed by his trades and signings) – but the point I'm trying to make is that he basically did lose for his entire tenure when his mindset was to win he failed upward |

Exactly. Now we need a guy a bit better at trading and cap management. Hopefully JR can be that. Giraffe contract is going to Benning’s ghost. - neem55
I can't wait until you learn to count past 3 and the reality of OEL's contract finally sinks in. |

Demko, Petey, Hughes, Boeser.
Gaunce, Jensen, Schroeder, Hodgson.
One GM had "no plan for the future"
Can you figure out what GM was which? - manvanfan
Gaunce (26), Jensen( 29), Schroeder (22), Hodgson (10), Horvat (9)
Demko (36), Petey (5), Hughes (7), Boeser (23), Virtanen (6), McCann (24), Juolevi (5), Pod (10)
Hits and misses. Different teams at different stages, and drafting at different slots. MG drafting sucked, but he wanted to win and did. JB drafting decent, but he wanted to win and couldn't. |

Your argument is your belief in what you think, not what Benning was actually thinking. He could have been lying to you. You don't know. You can look at what has happened and form your own belief's.
Lordy has done the same with the vaccine. I guess that makes him right as well.
(Sorry Lordy)
The question is, is this team in win now mode if they trade Miller?

How is that the question?! They clearly are not if they trade their best offensive weapon for picks and prospects. How could they possibly be in win-now mode by trading him? |

Rutherford did say the team deserves a shot next season with the same roster. I wouldn't expect changes although the blowout last night and Demmer being pulled will re-ignite the trade talks. Again if Miller gets 4 players like TT did in CGY we have to look at it. 1-2-3 rounders and a roster player preferably a RHD all good. If not next year. |

We could've missed the playoffs just as easily with the group of expiring contracts we traded away to get him. |

Like MOST in here were I'm ok with the OEL contract as we got Garland and dumped Beags Rous and LE. Would you rather those three stayed instead? lol |

Ya Garland is good, OEL has been just ok. I like his physicality and steadiness but north of 6 mil for that is crazy. I wish we had Tanev over giraffe at 2 million cheaper and about 12 times better defensively. The guy was so bad last night i was at the game wondering how any of you stand up for that guy. Turns the puck over every other shift, so wishy washy with the puck on his stick. Out of position when he doesnt. |

I would rather have those deadmeat contracts expiring in a couple of months and have that cap space, and the draft picks given up instead of hafling Garland and OEL deadmeat contract. |

No one knows exactly what anyone is thinking. I mean, that doesn't make for a good argument.
So the evidence I have to form my belief on Benning is: what he had said (about being competitive, how long it would take, what the team is, where he sees the team going, etc) and his actions on the job (trading picks for older players, signing vets to long term big $$ deals, etc).
The evidence against that, is the idea he might have just been lying? And there are some good players on the team he drafted?
Sure, he drafted some good players. But again, his words and actions point to him trying to make a competitive team and failing at it, thus having those top picks by being a bad talent evaluator at the professional level.
If a GM was really thinking about building the future of a club, do you think they would trade for more picks, or trade away more picks? GMs building a long-term vision don't trade away multiple 1sts, that's a "win now" mindset. Won't even touch on the 2nds |

We could've gotten Garland with the 1st we gave them. I'd have rather ridden out the last year of those contracts for sure, especially if the cost of getting rid of them was eating an additional 6 years and 7.2 mil cap hit. |
