You found a way to insert Nazi in there but I’m honestly disappointed you couldn’t squeeze in a little white supremacy. Be better. - Cptmjl
No, I did not "squeeze" Nazi in there. Perhaps Fascist would be a more accurate term, but it has less emotional impact/is more abstract. I essentially used Nazi=fascism.
1. The actions of Putin were boilerplate fascism in line with Hitler, Mussolini and Milosevic.
2. The speech Putin gave was boiler plate fascism, evoking ancient glories of fatherland, fantasy injustices against his ethnicity, and delivered in emotional and unstable terms. Indeed, like all but Milosevic above, he is also small in height.
3. Yeah, he left out the jews and made no reference to the "globalized elite". But in accusing the Jewish leader of a country (who is the descendant of holocaust victims, who won >70% of the vote in free and fair elections) of being a Nazi, and in bringing up Tsarist Russia (which wrote the textbook on Jewish pogroms, upto just a few year before Bolshevic revolution) maybe he didn't actually leave them out.
I said Nazi supporters, not Nazi. I wrote suspected, not accused. In iotw, my statement had a little more nuance than you are giving me credit for. |

Dude, it might be useful to pay a little attention to what I am saying instead of railing at the usual strawmen.
I am saying: questions in press conferences, banners in stands, protests near home, and on their social media platforms, not just to NHL players but all public personalities.
(Please note: this is the exact same thing that was done against South African athletes during the Apartheid regime. Except the social media part.)
I am not saying: any civil or criminal escalation beyond that. Nor am I saying any harassment of any "ordinary" Russian at say Brighton Beach.
Why I am saying this: Since the fall of the USSR, the Russian elite are enmeshed in western professions and public life. Their lives are avidly followed back home, and many of them are very close to corridors of power (though less so in the last few years).
The practical aspects of such social stigma is to disturb the lives and hope collectively it percolates up and creates social pressure. If Mr. Putin wants to recreate the Cold War, let him be reminded in direct and indirect ways what his country faced in those days, and how it went.
And even if it did not have any practical effect: Sports, beyond competition between team and team, also has a moral component to it. When we support sports, we are buying in to the notion that entities can compete with passion and yet stay within rules. The government of the individuals involved have broken such a pact. I understand that protesting them is a personally illiberal act, but so is the draft during a war. And this is a war.
So, I am personally ok with this tradeoff.
Two digressions:
1. Panarin should be lionized and given a bigger platform, like 60 mins, because of Navalny and what Navalny has said about Ukraine.
2. The Japanese internment has nothing to do with the current situation. - PT21
DDDDUUUUUDDDEEEE...You never said ANY of this on the thread. You regularly throw your education around on these boards and you made a highly uneducated statement in this thread. For the uninitiated, this is what I responded to:
No, thats going too far.
But I would like them to feel the heat psychologically. Let them denounce the actions. If not, let them feel the social stigma and I hope it is significant. They are not going to hotdog it across our ice and think they can keep their trap shut and we will cheer them on as though nothing has happened.
And let their leaders understand that all over the world, unless proven otherwise, Russians will be treated with a suspicion that they are Nazi supporters.
Everything has changed.
I didn't build up a straw man at all. I hit at your broad statement that: "Russians will be treated with a suspicion that they are Nazi supporters."
You made a stupid statement about all Russians, and now you're backtracking which is fine. Happens all the time even with intelligent people and men of letters. But don't put it on me. You (frank)ed up. Own it. |

I actually clarified yesterday in the Flyers thread, right after I posted that statement here.
Since you evidently have very little interest in the broader debate beyond the personal gotcha, I will happily satisfy your primary objective, and display further evidence of my irritating education by saying, yeah, I should have clarified further.

Its all my fault because I didn't check the Flyers thread? Got it.
Pride before humility. I appreciate your clarity, here, on this subject. I enjoy most of what you post. But I need to be reminded that there are real people here behind the posters, and it is clear you are completely insufferable and can't admit when you've f8cked up. That means being right is more important to you than understanding. You've clarified that you're a fraud.

I am sure your fellow Flyers posters were all anxiously awaiting your explanation. |

I honestly don't think I "(frank)ed up". If so, I would have no problems at all admitting it. I certainly should have been clearer. I thought it was implicit from the reasoning.
As for the rest of your personal fetish, dripping with cliches (educated/big words = elitism), please be informed that:
1. I grew up with a lot of help from food stamps, and played football in high school and grew up in a rural area where I hunted.
2. My wife is black and works in a non profit for which I volunteer 2 hours every week.
3. Much of our lives and money go towards supporting social causes of the very maginalized, including immigrant communities, who would find it amusing that a fan of an expensive sport like Hockey, who has the time and energy to post on a message board, should consider himself a representative of "realness".
My personality is not going to change in the slightest, and I would again gently suggest we move on from the personal, and that there are no hard feelings at all for what you said (indeed you made me laugh), but that I am out of this discussion.
