They should fire the cannon twice for a 2nd goal, thrice for a 3rd goal, and so on. They are not picking the low hanging game experience fruit there.

Yes definitely, they should be playing *checks notes*... Rubins? Instead?

Liljegren has been tanked by his inexperience being forced up the lineup.

If you think Rubins is going to be the remedy there... Ooof...

Not a remedy. But they gotta at least spell off the disaster that is Liljgren right now.

We have to get our heads out of Marner and Mathew’s asses, both of them flew by the Columbus player forcing the rookie to make a tough choice.

If he sticks to his man and Nyquist walks in and scores we would still be blaming Lili

Keefe has to stop forcing rookies into the top pairing and expecting it to be productive for their development. It's not going to go well, that's obvious.

If they forced Rubins in there and it went badly like it would, it wouldn't be the players fault then either.

Since Muzzin went down, Liljegren has still been better than both Holl and Dermott a lot of nights, he just needs to play where he's proven to be capable. Not as a patchwork solution playing all the minutes with Rielly

Speaking of D I read today New Jersey told PK Subban they won’t be resigning him next year. What’s the over / under that he’s a Leaf next year?

I’m ok with it if it’s on the cheap and he is bottom pairing with a 2nd pairing in a pinch situation. He would bring some toughness to the blue line, will fight and certainly isn’t shy about using his stick. Would also add a bomb from the point maybe for PP2.

Great point the flybys were the start of the problem for sure on that goal.

Rubins is with the marlies and the leafs currently have 23 players so he can’t be called up so it’s even more of a fantasy than thinking he’d be effective lol

I’d rather they bring in someone more defensive.

I am kind of interested what he will get offered by some team this summer tho

Yes and Lilly and Sandin have been fine as rookies. I don’t think there confidences are being ruined by placing them in more difficult situations

Ya he will get offers for more, it’ll be about what he wants - play for a contender in a lesser role for less cake or more money somewhere else.

I think his ego will have him go somewhere to play top 4 but who knows maybe he has always wanted to play for his hometown?

Lol the Leafs have been rumored to be after him for as long as Dubas has been in Toronto. You may end up disappointed if Dubie can catch his white whale, I guess we will see.

Disagree. Then the fly-bys are even more apparent. It's simply not his job to go swimming like that.

This bang on. They are rookie d men… expecting them to play damn near perfect all of the time is fantasizing and nothing more.

That’s why it’s risky to play multiple rookie d men regularly. Liljegren is solid but the forwards left him hanging there and that’s the last thing they should have done.

You're assuming Dubas will still be Captain Ahab at that point. May be someone else captaining the Pequod by then. 😉

I don't think it's a confidence thing as much as the results indicate its just plain above their capabilities and the team result is bad. Sandin got killed there, Liljegren has been touch and go.

They've both played well in second pair roles as a ceiling, why force it to a place that clearly isn't working. Not good for anyone.

Dubas has got to fix the blueline, period. In the meantime:

Rielly / Dermott
Brodie / Liljegren
Sandin / Lyubushkin

Playing with Rielly is the only spot I didn't absolutely hate Dermotts game. Rotate Holl in as needed. [/img]

It was late
- Fakepartofme

It should be noted that only have 75% of the hits delivered against the Leafs this year been late, but about 90% of the hits delivered by Columbus in this game have not only been late, they have been followed by post hit antics - like holding. It was a bad call based on the precedent set in this game, not the actual rules.

Well as I said I don’t think he addresses the leafs defensive need.

They need a solid shutdown d man, not a point producer, someone who isn’t fancy at all.

This is a fair comment. But if this is really all we can expect....how can anyone seriously consider this team a contender?
