Just doesn't fit the narrative most want to spew on this forum about Risto. Here is another fact, Sanheim is playing the best hockey of his Flyers' career right now and Risto has had a hand in this. Here is another fact, Risto and Sanheim are the Flyers top and most consistent pairing defensemen, not Provorov and Braun. So they can take their analytics and stick them you know where!
- jd250

Ristolainen has no positive impact on Sanheim. In fact the analytics evidence shows that Ristolainen is a hindrance to Sanheim. It's interesting that when it fits your narrative, such as the Flyers being ahead of the game in analytics, you're all in. When it doesn't fit your narrative, take the analytics and stick them you know where. You keep offering opinion as facts.

I see Mayhew back in the lineup which I think is deserved, but why the hell isn't JVR the one being sat down? Willman is playing better than JVR. Hell, Gritty is playing better than JVR. To take a line from the movie Youngblood, "He could skate around out there with a carton of eggs and not break any". ENUFF!! I sense that Eichel is due for a breakout game with the Knights and my spider senses are tingling that tonight just might be that night. Eh what?

Sanheim couldn’t get any worse than his play last season with multiple career lows and no Ristolainen to blame. If Risto has been that bad, Sanheim could thank him for making him look good.

Frost should be up and centering Farabee and Atkinson. Brassard should be moved to wing and JVR to the 4th line.

Dave Scott is NOT breathing down Fletcher's neck in terms on hockey decisions, all Dave Scott wants is a winning team so his revenue numbers look good for Comcast. Clarke just wants to win, he has absolutely no loyalty to players like Risto. And you have absolutely no evidence that the Flyers are playing catchup in the analytics game, in fact there is evidence that shows they are ahead of the game.
- jd250

Dave Scott's win now/action for bias mandate doesn't influence Chuck's roster decisions and options?

And Risto and Kevin Hayes are right out of the Bob Clarke playbook. The obsession with the big 2C (Gratton, Primeau, Handzus, etc) and an infatuation with big physical towering D (Kubina, Rathje, Hatcher, McGillis, Richardson, etc). Going the cheap route to address the goaltending (Jones) was also classic Clarkie.

As for your last sentence... ROFLMAO.

In another installment of you can't make this shyte up there is a video going around on FB showing the Blackhawk's mascot beating the shyte out of a fan that heckled him! Gritty up next??

I think it’s funny anyone would ask this question. I’ll try to explain this as if I’m talking to a 4 year old. JvR gets paid 7 million dollars to do a job, regardless of his job preference. JvR has scored in the last week. JvR has a role on this team. JvR is an NHLer, Willman is an AHL call up. This isn’t EA sports.

Guys, you’re all blowing my mind with the questions asked this season. “Why is Yandle in the line up? Hey sucks and he doesn’t deserve to play. We’ll probably because the Flyers are on the road to nowhere and Yandle currently has the NHL longest iron man streak in history of the sport. He’s not getting sit because it’s a story that draws attention. The moment we all think with logic, we’ll have our answers.

Is it bigger than the Flyers? Apparently, the more you hire, the better it is.

Ian can only provide a 30K foot view. That's the ground rule for the interviews, for obvious reasons: nothing proprietary, nothing about specific players.

One thing many fans don't understand about analytics departments is that their job is to mine data that hockey ops wants and can use. Coaches, as stated in the interviews Bundy and I did for that 2019 interview that ran today on Crossing Broad, mostly want stuff they can apply toward homework for pre-scout meetings and to compare to their observations from the bench and on video. GMs and player personnel directors typically want different types of info.

Also, Cole Anderson was a big get. He's one of the foremost goalie analytics innovators and is a former goalie himself and Amherst. I don't know as much about Katie Yates, but she is apparently considered a rising star. Matt Karliner is a super bright guy and stats analyst (my cousin worked with him when he was coaching, albeit in basketball).

Here's the big thing: Per Ian Anderson, NHL's new player/puck tracking technology has taken the amount of game-event data generated every game from roughly 4,000 events per game to about 1 million. So now there's a leaguewide race to be at the forefront of mining and developing metrics that the end-users could benefit from.

I can't claim to be an expert on the workings of an NHL analytics department but Ian Anderson explained how they function in tandem with many different parts of the hockey ops side of an org for the purpose of providing them what they want and find useful. Specific to coaches, as the interviews Bundy and I did show, they tend to like stuff they can use for pre-scouts, compare against video and first-hand assessments and to show to certain players as supplenmental feedback if they think it's applicable.

There's more than enough work to be done for a five-person department year-round because they generate it in-house, and the NHL's data dump has created an all-new technological race that it will take a numbers of years to see which organizations got on top of the fastest. I know that even many coaches are excited about aspects of the tracking technology because they can get more in the way of certain types of data they really want.

So we'll see how it goes over time.

Yeah, that's where it seems the data dept is with the Flyers. They're just there to provide some background info when requested. The team is not particularly interested in being data-driven, like Carolina.

Re: the new NHL data dumps... most teams already had the personnel in place to process and analyze the new stuff. Flyers are a day late and a dollar short, as usual.

Could've been his injury history, could've been cap related. I thought it was dumb of them to not pony up and pay him. They've proved me wrong. Instead they went after a fringe player with character issues and he's had a resurgence (you're right, he will want to get paid) and rounded out their defense with Ian Cole (never really an analytics darling) and Ethan Bear. They just seem to know how to evaluate players and fit them into their team. Instead of paying Hamilton his due, they took the money elsewhere by offer sheeting Kotkaniemi and signing Andersen and it's worked out
- TobyFlenderson

My suspicion is that he will take less to stay somewhere that took a chance on him.

Thanks for feeling the need to talk to me like a 4 yr old. I mean, I guess playing the game for 30+ years and being a season ticket holder for 20+ years(when real hockey was being played in Philly) means nothing, but thanks for setting me straight genius! My take is that he isn't earning a spot in the lineup and either is Yandle. I don't give a shyte what they're being paid. It's hard to watch a 7 million a year turd skate around with his head in the clouds night after night, but thanks again. Where do some of you people come from? China?

Chucky likes either big Finns or small snipers and Bobby likes skills-deficient, large players who take the body a lot. The rest is details and window-dressing.

Oh, okay Dad. I really aspire to have you agree with all my posts cause all your posts are loaded with intelligence. I forgot that there are a bunch of dingbats on here that still support JVR for some reason. Guess this fan base has gotten soft just like the players. Thanks....no thanks!

I didn’t say I supported JvR. I’m just using common sense. Hey, let’s call up half the Phantoms because most of this team isn’t good. How about that?

Hey genius, why don't you ask the guy that wrote this blog what he thinks of JVR's play lately? If I'm not mistaken, he also wondered why JVR wasn't being sat down. I guess none of us know anything compared to you. We bow at your mere presence here dear Sir.

I don’t care what Bill writes. I’m a big boy, I can form my own opinions. Bill isn’t a GM or coach. Bill supports having Ristolainan on this team, while many fans widely do not. In this case, JvR is contracted a lot of money to play hockey. Willman Mercifully has no shot at ever being in the NHL again beyond this season.

Again, we all bow at your feet genius! Enjoy the game. Risto brings something to this team that it needs. There is such a lack of physicality on this team, but he needs to be no higher than a 5 or 6 Dman. Heard he is willing to resign for 4 million a year. Uh oh!
