let me see if I understand this. Risto is a bad defenseman. All the analytics prove this. The Flyers know it, but feel his aggressive style of play will endear him to the "hit somebody" crowd and will be a big draw thus making signing him to a 6x$5mil a good business decision? - Dkos
Risto will be in next years video prominently throwing a few hits to drum up season ticket sales. Guaranteed so yes in corpcast view it was a very good business decision |

Front office thinks this is a great roster only hampered by bad luck with injuries. They legit think this is a good team lol |

Good business might equal bad hockey. I think Risto is a 4/5 defenseman depending on the team he’s on and his partner.
Fletcher had to sign him because he was not getting a 1 st round pick back so he would have looked like a idiot for giving up so much to get him and getting very little for him.
I like some that he hits hard but he’s out of position going after those hits. I hope he gets better coaching to get out of that tendency but I’m not sure that coach is currently on the team. |

You were saying that it’s not business run and gave examples.
I was agreeing with pt21.
My example of car and mountain is just showing how the distraction keeps you off the real goal. To explain further your buying a car who gives a (frank) if it drives up a mountain like commercial. You care about cost price mileage etc.
Flyers same way they pump out renovations gritty new goal song in arena entertainment etc like car commercial car going up mountain. But you as fan shouldn’t give (frank) you should want on ice product better not the distraction of like gritty
Business 101. It’s not about the product it’s about the sellability and profit.
The flyer don’t care about on ice product. They care about profit. Corp run. That is all any corp cares about. - Stayin alive

I'll get to this in my article today -- for the record, I'm not at all convinced that a Ristolainen re-sign means that Travis Sanheim is on his way out -- but it would be very dumb to get rid of the guy who is the primary reason Risto's raw results this year aren't truly awful. - rayc16
I don’t understand. I’ve been told Ristolaninen is truly awful all season. |

Ristolainen's biggest issue can't be coached. It's his brain. He's a neanderthal that just wants to go around hitting and pushing guys around. All after the fact of course. I love the comments that he brings the physical element that we need while the opposition is winning pucks and pummeling the net with chances when he's out there. I was even previously told that other players are scared to come on his side of the ice.

As a buffalo native I’ve seen more than most here of risto. I said from day 1 exactly that point. He will make a hit or 2 almost every game to get you excited. But he will chase that hit a few times a game also leading to goals against. It’s a wash from that standpoint. Add in nothing offensively and it’s ultimately a negative |

Maybe the Flyers medical team can come up with a breakthrough discovery where they can extend Ellis’ hockey IQ to Risto and Risto’s durability to Ellis.

Wouldn't be surprised at all. - rayc16
G is a fierce competitor. I don't think he wants to go out the way this season will end, in tatters. I also believe he would prefer to retire in Philadelphia.
Now the NHL offers long time, talented players a shot at the Cup with that rental process. G would be welcome by any team that rents his skill set for a Cup run. And I believe G deserves that opportunity. I would root for his team to win the Cup for his sake alone.
But I do hope that he will make his "side hustle" with the Avs, Panthers, or Blues, or whomever just that, a detour. If he is upfront with those intentions, he will garner less in the trade than if he intends to sign with the new team. I can live with that.
I realize it's rare for a player to return to his original team post a rental trade. But G is a unique person and athlete. I also believe he is agonizing over this decision.
I believe G has been under appreciated as a player in Phila and one way to remedy that would be to make another deep playoff run before retirement.
The biggest obstacle to all this happening is simple, the team isn't talented enough to make a deep playoff run. I am sure G knows this.
He deserves better than the team management has assembled around him.
If our best player jumps ship and doesn't return, I will be disappointed, but I understand.
The guy still players harder and faster with skill than any other Flyer.
Having restarted Flyers game attendance at the arena, that's still plain to see on the ice in person. The game, btw, is soo much better live than on Tv.
Too bad most of his teammates don't have his desire and tenacity on the ice.
If they did, he might not be moving in the first place.
Take your shot G! You earned it.
But I for one would welcome you back next season.
You still have unfinished business in Philadelphia.

Here's what bugs me. They don't. Even Scott says they are 2-3 pieces away. Laugh all you like, but even 2-3 is not a small #, and I am sure he doesn't mean minor role players. As for CF:
"Look, I don’t think there’s any question we need more top-end talent. Claude Giroux is our best offensive hockey player, ....But we do need more top-end talent, there’s no question. We’ve tried to address that a bit the last few years, adding some players with some skill sets that we need. We just have to continue to chip away at that. But I do believe there’s a group of players here that can be part of a winning core. But we definitely need to add more pieces and that will be the focus going forward."
If you admit that Giroux at 34 is a beter offensive player than your #1c, why did you give the latter such a long contract at the cusp of 30? Why are you giving out so many long term contracts to players most of whom play subsidiary roles?
Where exactly is the high end talent you admit you need gonna come from? Via trade? You have neither the prospects not the $ to sign them. By the draft? Then for god's sake why aren't you blowing things up and trying to get the best picks you can?
This franchise is phoning it in as blatantly as the Coyotes are tanking. I dunno how much more data we need. They have no real intent to contend anytime soon.

Your take on this is completely off base. You're ignoring the comments about a quick reset and getting right back in it. Scott and Fletcher believe the same thing they believed last off season. That can make those moves and be ready for next season. That they can acquire that top end talent quickly. Again, you're ignoring many clues and looking through the narrow prism of your point of view. Teams can have more than one really good player. It's as if you think if one player is the teams best offensive player than you can't sign your 1C to a market deal.
It's exactly what the other poster said. They think they have a good team that is a few moves away from contending. That they were kept from being a good team this year due to injuries. What they fail to realize is that they would've been a bubble team at best. |
