He is only worth a 5th round pick.

There’s no sense trading for anyone when your defense is absolutely horrible. It would be wasted assets.

He’s obviously worth a lot more but I wouldn’t pay any more than that when you have no chance of winning anything. Again it would be just a wasted asset, although you’d get a decent player.

Would have much rather see the team rebuild years ago, but they are well past that stage. They need to get a bit bigger and stronger up front and work on getting another leftside and right-side defenseman, unless they move Hughes to the right side.

I don’t disagree with you, however, I’m of the opinion Miller and Horvat have one year left on their deals and I personally think they won’t return. So essentially you have a one year window to be competitive, why waste what very few assets you have in the form of the three actual prospects in the system worth mentioning or even worse - valuable draft picks. If you want a guy like Crouse, draft one.

Benning was famous for wasting assets to accomplish sweet frank all, let’s stop that cycle.

Nice to see you corrected yourself, as I was about to have to do it for you.😁

I would think that both Miller and Horvat are the priority signings this off-season. They need to lock up the teams 3 best forwards, as Pouty is already signed for another 2 seasons.
But I have no idea what the direction this management team wants to go in, hopefully it isn't a continuation of the previous regime.
Bigger, stronger and faster is my hope.

I remember when he was the throw in for Arizona taking on a contract, Zetterberg maybe? Everyone laughed at what a pathetic pickup that was. Times they are a changing.

I could be totally wrong and Miller and Horvat re-sign, in that case I’d love for them to give up assets for a bigger guy like Crouse. But I don’t have that type of information so I’m erring on the side of things not going well. After 50 years of being a fan it’s just bred into me

He’s making the most of getting tons of minutes on a crappy team, he won’t get on better teams…good for him. He’s still a third line player on a better team.

Nothing wrong with having a good player like Crouse on the 3rd line. It means that the team is getting better and not having to play players in roles above their capabilities.

Bolland

A few of us wanted Benning to make trades like that with his cap space. That's how Carolina got Teuvo as well.

Made way more sense than trading away picks for tweeners and signing overpaid vets

Lawson Crouse with the hatty tonight for the Yotes, even strength, PP and a short handed goal, up to 18 goals on the year…price just went up. He’d for sure be a great third line guy. In the playoffs your third line typically plays a huge role as you go deeper into the playoffs. Fourth line, not so much.

I overheard Bieksa and some of the panel guys mentioning third lines that have helped teams be successful in past playoffs, Chicago, Los Angeles and Pittsburg being mentioned along with the Torres, Hansen and Malhotra line for the Canucks in 2011.

- LeftCoaster

The third line always separates teams come playoff time. Sometimes it gets to the 4th line. We also need a top 4-5 D, and to actually qualify for the playoffs.

I'm actually fine with the 4th line.

I agree, just that at the time he was “a bum” and now he’s a valuable 3rd liner. How could it been any worse than Vey/Bärtschi/Clendenning/Stanton etc?

I think this is a big part of the problem. Having rookie players coming in and having to be (or being) the “best players” right away hurts long term. They get smug, or self important, they make too much too soon, don’t develop the work ethic etc. the guys now like Miller had to pay their dues and it’s paying off.

Maybe I’m wrong 🤷‍♂️

I agree.
This team was so starved for talent that Adam Gaudette made the team, and Troy Stecher was the teams best defenseman, as voted by the fans.

So, that being said, do they give Rathbone another shot this season or let him continue to marinate in Abby? He got another goal his 1st game back from injury yesterday.

Not aimed at you but I don't like having a left side of Hughes OEL and Rathbone. I doubt Rathbone ever lands a permanent spot with the big club.

No point in bringing him up until he can defend well at an NHL level. We're at full capacity with undersized players.

He might be an NHL player now, I don’t really know. But if he came in and played 3rd pairing, 10-12 minutes, maybe a bit of PK time and let him grow into a bigger role over the next few years instead of him being a 20+ minute guy from day 1 (like Hughes) I believe that’s a better path.

Höglander should be a 4th line winger learning to defend, and dig etc, and when given the opportunity to take on a bigger role you get to see if he has the skill to do it, instead of being the 2nd line winger out of training camp.

I agree with all of this.
