Unfortunately, that train left the station months ago without them. - JohnScammo
Not this season obviously, but the framework of the teams that went to back-to-back ECF is still all here. Sorokin is getting better. Dobson is turning into a high-end defenseman. Wahlstrom still has a ways to go and the book is still out on Bellows. But other than that, most of the pieces that got them where they were the last few seasons are all still here. Save for Eberle and ( ) Toews
A small retool in the offseason with a couple good UFA signings and this team could be even better than they were.
I'd really like to see them go after Mason Marchment, who it doesn't seem like FLA will be able to re-sign. He'd be a great fit on this team. |

Problem is that, outside of maybe Shane Wright, nobody taken in this first round is playing in the NHL next year. Which means they're 2-3 years away from even getting into the system, let alone the NHL.
It probably takes 7-8 years total from draft day before you even know what you have in a player. Wahlstrom/Dobson were taken 5 years ago and are still developing.
Outside of the top 2 or 3 selections, most guys take a lot of time to develop. And I'm big on having a good pipeline of prospects, but right now it seems like they should be all aboard the "win-now" train while they can be. - eichiefs9
Yeah I’m aware of all of this. It’s ok to have a high draft pick join the team in a couple of years. By all accounts that’s when we’ll probably really need them.
Edit; I’ll also add my posts were focused on giving us the best chance at Wright. Albeit a small chance it would be huge. |

Now only the bottom 11 teams all have a shot at winning 1st overall, since they changed the rules to allow teams to only move up 10 spots. We're sitting at 10th-worst currently |

I’m not exactly celebrating losses as much as I’m not cheering meaningless wins. It’s not a big secret this team needs young talent and drafting higher in the first round is the best way to make that happen. It also doesn’t cost us anything and commits the player to us at low cost for a few years. All of the above are things this team needs imo. We’re not making the playoffs finishing close does this team no favors. - Cptmjl
I can understand that.
As to the second part, of that I’m not so sure. The side effects of losing are not necessarily limited to the year in which the losses occur. It’s just my opinion of course, but I feel that a lack of success can sometimes do more damage to a franchise, than the resulting high end pick is worth.
I can understand your viewpoint, though. It is logical. I just can longer get behind it. |

Look no further then them as to why I’m not to concerned with us winning another game this season. Though the two drafts they won didn’t amount to much for them |

I get it and understand your point. We had a culture of losing for decades with this club. I’m less concerned with that with who we have in charge now. |

Toews wasn't there for last year's run to the Conference Finals, and was generally regarded as having had a weak playoffs the previous season. Just to be clear, I was sorry that Lou had to trade him for obvious salary cap reasons. He's young enough to be still improving, and he likely would have been a big help to the D corps had he stayed. I might argue that Leddy is missed even more. His ability to skate the puck out of the d-zone when his teammates were all covered was a significant plus, and resulted in fewer instances of the team getting caught in its own d-zone.
Having said all that, I tend to agree with you that there is cause for optimism for next season for the reasons you state. We are now in 11th place, according to the Tankathon, but the site states that they are unclear as to the impact of the new rules limiting moving up only 10 places. Of course, none of that matters, since the Devils will again win the lottery. |

Still don't believe it, but it'd have to start with a 1st and Brendan Brisson for me to even consider doing it |

Standings and season aside, that was a fun game to watch, and, let's face it, there hasn't been an awful lot of fun this season.
Game was fast and physical, the goaltending was excellent, the crowd was into it, and the good guys won. I'll take it. |

100% Agree.
The Islanders were in a losing culture for decades and Lou came in and changed it. You play to win and there’s no other way. Losing is a cancer that kills your teams confidence. It’s never ok to lose! |
