I thought you were following the Florida model? That's not what they did.

Huh? Florida didn't trade top players for picks. I sent you that article from the Athletic.
Rutherford’s in a somewhat similar position to Zito in that he’s trying to salvage a rebuild that has some valuable core pieces, an expensive, ageing and insufficient blue line as well as limited cap flexibility. Let’s recap the main takeaways the Canucks can learn from Florida’s rise back to contenders:
Flexibility is king in today’s NHL. Vancouver needs to do whatever it can within reason to gut its expensive and replaceable middle class and create more cap room to play with. That extra money would give them much-needed wiggle room to acquire and retain more top players in the long run.
If you take enough fliers, you can replace those non-star/middle of the lineup players a lot easier than you might think. Florida unearthed multiple top-six players and top-four defencemen inexpensively this way and then used the cap savings to acquire high-end players like Reinhart and Bennett.
Do whatever it takes to help elevate your top players into elite ones
Analyze when you think your Cup window is and keep your future assets until it opens
There’s obviously a lot more that will need to go into making Vancouver’s retool successful than the points analyzed in this piece, but there’s still a lot of valuable insights to glean from the Panthers’ model.

I dunno man, are the Panthers good because of Reiner and Bennsey or are the players “good” because of the Panthers. Like the Avs goalie who Seattle bucked up for.
Anyway, I agree, need to create cap space in order to pay the people who will actually be driving them forward, if that’s Miller or not.
Are we ready for Must Win yet? Stars lose, so the door is open. 3-1 Canucks in a rough and tumble affair. I’m calling goalie fight at center ice. - 1970vintage
Edmonton and Vegas going to win. The start of the season was just too bad. It was always going to be a very long shot. Changing a piece or two from the Canucks I doubt makes much of a difference in the short term but better for long term. Getting future pieces.
For when Miller is 37 and playing with two young pups on one of the best lines in the league.

Blowout loss, 6-1 Calgary in revenge game for being humiliated earlier by the Canucks

Cap space is why they let guys go. That should be the focus. Taking back just further along prospects that are through a year or two of their ELC's means paying them a year or two earlier and not having it for when the window opens. If you could split it between one player and one pick ideally.
