Jim Benning is a good hockey man. Loved it, what I don't love is how poor the D is all of a sudden.

Well, Dermott was beaten on the depth chart by Liljegren and Sandin. Dermott is paid more than them and plays the left side.

Dermott needed to go to make cap space and he isn't as young as the other two dmen. To be fair, leaf fans wanted anything for his cap to be gone so a 3rd was a win in many eyes.

He was definitely serviceable in the line up but how do you beat Rielly and Muzzin on the left side? He rotated in and out in the bottom pair and time ran out for him to take a top spot.

I would like to see how he does with more opportunity.

I wouldn't call the leafs D "very suspect". They aren't a juggernaut defensive core but are decent and they got better with Gio.

Dermott will top out at a 4th guy with some special team work.
