However the bottom line is is playing on bad teams that have poor possession and poor defensive structure has certainly played a significant part of Risto's "poor" analytics and has hurt his development as a player. You just can't discount this factor.

Actually I would say that the first statement is not true. Ristolainen has very strong raw skills. For lack of a better term, he's just a dumb hockey player who completely lacks hockey sense and doesn't have to ability to put his raw skills to good use.

He is not a good player. He is a mediocre player and is not a player that helps a bad team or a poor possession team become better. He contributes to that rather than improving it. Those are the true factors. That is not a player that you trade a 1st, 2nd and an NHL player for and then extend him for 5 years to save face.
