Svechnikov just cross checked Seguin in the face. I await word on his upcoming suspension. - GreatGigInTheSky
I saw that and was thinking - oh man I bet Leafs fans will looking at this outcome (and rightfully so).
More than likely nothing seeing as Drouin was allowed to bounce a defenceless Seguins head off the ice with 2 cross checks to the head without even a fine I believe. Jokes. |

I mean . . . realistically, it's not even close.
Look, after the cross-checks delivered in the playoffs last year without penalty or subsequent discipline or the Chara cross-check to Gallagher's face or, or, or . . .we have a right to be salty. You tack on the 6 game suspension to Spezza and there's even more reason to feel that the DoPS is not in any way objective or ignoring the crests when the evaluate these plays.
But Matthews' shot to Dahlin's face absolutely deserved the suspension. The flaw here was that the DoPS didn't do their job previously, and sadly that they won't do it again in the future when called upon to do so. |

In my opinion:
1. Based on the track record of how the DoPS handed out suspension in the past (using some of your example listed and so many more instances) - Matthews should have gotten a fine at most. Especially considering he has not a single major penalty let alone suspension or fine on the past.
2. If you ignore the past and how the DoPS hs handled things and just completely ignore all that - Matthews should have gotten 1 game for it. He never targeted the player without reason. It was within a battle taking place. There was a back and forth and Matthews has a clean sheet past. Whether you believe him or not, I can all but be certain he argues that the cross check ran up the shoulder pad. I don’t by that but at the same time it os plausible that there was no vicious intent.
Put all that in a package and he is still absolutely responsible for his stick and actions regardless of his explanation so 1 game. |

I think part of the issue was Matthews did it during the outdoor game. One of the most promoted, watched, and fiscally heavy games the NHL has during the year. They even had children skating on ice close to the rink.
So in this situation if DoPS didn’t lay out a suspension it would become pretty obvious to everyone, even the semi hockey fans who did watch that game in particular, that the league doesn’t make sure that players who break the suspension worthy rules have to pay the price.
Willing to bet he’d only get fined if it was just a typical game due to his clean record. |

I'm not saying it was worse or anything, I'm saying it was a cross check to the head.
NHL Do"PS" can only do 2 things here. 1- Follow the new precedent set, or more likely, 2- continue being a joke. |

A. Outdoor game - huge viewership.
B. Leafs game - huge viewership.
C. Outdoor Leafs game - haha massive viewership |

I think the Matthews suspension was fair. That being said that means I believe any intentional cross check to the head should be a two game suspension.
Why this kind of suspension structure isn’t in place is beyond me. |

It's ok, the billion or so other people in the world who watch and like it don't mind if North Americans think "football" is something you play wearing a helmet. |

I also thought of Yushkevich because he was also tough as f* (although I think you may have already mentioned it in a previous thread and it resonated with me). He also had a pretty good slapshot and met Quinn's key criteria: He could make a solid outlet pass. I think Boosh has 10 assists this year, which is a career best for him. I'm not sure if he has the offensive "upside" (note: Yushkevich passed 30 points twice in his first two years with Philly, and then never again, so he wasn't exactly a dynamo!), but having a guy on the back-end who can make a smart pass, make a smart play, be in great supporting position, and erase people is something we desperately needed.
