Lotta ifs there. If they can get Gaudreau or Trochek and if Couturier and Hayes come back healthy then near the top 10 forward groups. Four teams have six 20 goal scorers this year. All 4 are making the playoffs. Atkinson is the only 20 goal scorer. Giroux could have been another. The Flyers had potentially seven 20 goal scorers at season start. Two horrible years of ifs. They need to start turning those ifs into reality.

Disaster for sure but I found myself discounting the farm system completely, I am starting to come back a little

Who would you take Matthews or Connor? Quick choice Connor but matthews with a hatty tonight and is just tearing it up.
I think whoever plays better in the playoffs this season is who I would take
McDavid is clearly better offensively. Matthews doesn’t put up those numbers without Marner. McDavid could put up big numbers playing with McEwen. - Minnyhock
its tough because matthews consistently does the rarest thing (in my opinion) to find and that is consistently score even strength goals. i know they all count the same and im not diminishing PP goals (which matthews also absolutely pours in) but his ability to consistently get shots off and be as lethal as he is without the man advantage is unrivaled.
Mcdavid is a better overall offensive player and simply plays at a different speed than everyone else and that allows him to elevate those around him to an extent that no one else is doing right now.
i know its not necessarily on them, but at a certain point they do need to start winning some playoff rounds though. fair or not.

Yeah, they need to elevate their teams or get on a team that wins. McDavid, Crosby, Ovi and Matthews are all generational players. Neither Wright nor Bedard will be as good as any of them.

it is the Playoffs that will be the difference for me, who can carry over their game to the playoffs

Appleyard is the eternal optimist. Thinks pretty much every prospect will be in the nhl. If they are not it is all the flyers developments fault. Cant be the player just isnt NHL level.
So going into next season there will be a ton of if's once again.

I don't think many people are aware of how good Matthews is away from the puck. He should get Selke consideration.

Last time Matthews played the Wild he stripped the puck from Duhaime in the neutral zone with less than 5 minutes left in a tie game and scored the winning goal. That was the 3rd time in the game that he picked someone’s pocket.
Johnny Hockey is lighting it up! Two more goals and an assist last night. He's now up to 34 goals and 61 assists on the season, and he is a whopping +50! Someone's going to give him a blank check and say pick your number.
If it's not illegal that's where I see it next - a player picks it up and lacrosse style takes a shot - Scoob
Also, it maybe developed in the volleyball/ baseball style, when a team mate flips a pass at a knee- waste level and a shooter just bets it in. In fact there were a few goals like that already(especially when a pass comes from behind the goal line).

What’s the reason people think he won’t re-sign with Calgary? Seems like a foregone conclusion that people see him leaving. I assume they have the cap room to match most offers he’ll get.
Calgary is also sitting in 1st in the Pacific. Usually don’t see guys ditch their teams when they’re doing well and have the cap room to bring them back.
