Was he aquired to move the needle? - Bettmanhatesus
If not then why not hang onto the cap space and keep the draft pick?

You are once again ignoring that Hamonic was off the books and three mil was new found cap space . Not only that but the hockey Gods gave us a third round draft pick. Minutes later it all went down the sh1tter because Alvi took on a player that could not crack the roster of his old team.
He was on the block for a long time . No one took him. Even teams looking for playoff depth didn't take him.
Just because he cracked the bottom part of a roster on a team that most of the fans complain about the D does not make him a good acquisition. He has not moved the needle one bit . We are still the same team as we were before.
I hope your wife does the shopping otherwise your cupboards would be full of Cheez Whiz and Pizza Pops.
- VANTEL
You are forgetting that Hamonic was moved to make room for Dermott, who plays the left side, which is where the need was. |
|
|
|
I think he looked very good in his three games here but we just signed a career back up goalie that has played 6 NHL games to a two year one way contract.
I sort of remember another GM making these types of signings. Can't remember his name .

2 years at 800 000 cap hit.
Not the 3.5 million for 2 years that has to be bought out after 1 season, nor is there bonuses that will be added to the following year's. |

This makes no sense to me . Hamonic was RHD and Dermott is playing LHD. Hamonic was traded for a good reason and was a very good move but it was not to get Dermott . Thirty minutes later Alvi (frank)ed it up.
Great that you guys are excited about Martin Dermott and Richardson. I will plan the parade .

building their team, they had their eye on him for awhile, with these new analytics team in management they figured it was worth it, he is only 25. |

I do realize that .
For the record though Holtby is having a good year this year. He is now playing on a structured team with a D system that does not remind people of the Keystone Kops.
It is another move treading water under the league wide cap issue. It could work out fine , I am saying it is a ballsy move that could turn south very quickly . I hope there is a back up plan just in case.

He reminds me of a Troy Stecher or Ben Hutton and any team admitting that they have had their eye on him for a while sends me the message get ready for more mediocracy .
I will get a better sense of how this new group is when I see bigger moves like what they do with Boeser and who they sign as a FA . |

Summer will give us a good idea of the nature of Direction Allvin and JR want to go. Good FA market this summer. I watched Rutherford a long time in PIT and know what to expect. For those here that still have cases of the 'Long Bennings' could be a remarkable journey lol |

I haven't really said if I like the new managers or not yet. I know everyone assumes that I don't like them when in fact they have done nothing yet. I am just laughing at everyone's excitement for a new group that have done SFA so far.
They picked up a waiver wire old man, traded for a bottom pairing Dman and signed a goalie that has 6 NHL games under his belt.
They have done nothing to get excited about or angry about but I am sitting back laughing at all the folks that think it is refreshing when in fact is is pretty much the same ol same ol.
I don't even expect a lot to happen in the summer. One trade , one buyout , one signing of a UFA. - VANTEL
Considering you’ve been crying about Dermott everyday since we acquired him, sure seems confusing that you say you’re not angry about it. |

Martin locked up for 2 years at ~750k. Solid deal, like the extra year of certainty. |

I'm sure they can bury him in the AHL if he doesn't work out. His salary wont exceed the cap relief.

Yeah but the other side is me saying slurpers are getting tiny little boners over the new group picking up a 38 year old waiver wire dump , a fringe Dman and signing a two year contract of a career AHL goalie that has played in two NHL games since 2016.
I am honestly not mad at them I am more laughing at the CGs in here slurping it all down.
These are nothing more than Benning type additions.

All true . We had a number of signings like that this year with Sautner Petan Bailey. Not sure of the exact list but Benning did sign a few of them .
Problem is though if you send him down you need to replace him and that could be tricky mid season.

I don't know what you can do ? If you are the other GM what are you giving up to acquire Boeser or Myers? Then you need to replace them cheaper? Not an easy task at all. I think there is two more years of the same old stuff we have seen in the past .
What do you think a team is going to give up for JTM? He will be 30 and wanting 6 x 8 . Not only that but Canucks got to replace his 30 goals with someone at the same cost? That is one hell of a big ask from any management.

It's not like the Canucks need an amazing backup goalie. Shouldn't be hard to find a guy mid season, assuming you have some cap space. |

If all goes according to plan it is a good move. If Demko gets injured and is gone for 6 weeks the season can fall apart very quickly.
I was hoping Canucks would look at this combo but I do admit it is a risky move.

I mean he's a career back up goalie... and they signed him to be a back up goalie? The audacity. |
