We signed a cheap back up for a role. If Demko went down for any long time it’s like most teams it can sink their season. Alternative is spending too much on a 1b to sit & watch for 60-65 games no thx. Martin is fine & very cap friendly & 1 more move to make cap space as said by JR. other roster moves to retool will happen at their own pace. Offseason #1 is to come. - Nighthawk
No poop.
Anyone else want to explain the same thing to me over and over after I posted pros and cons. |

I will give it a try;
Martin has been signed to a 2 year, one-way contract contract that has a cap-hit of 800 000 per.
He can be sent down( waived) and may or may not get claimed. Although, I believe they will try not to waive him, after seeing the claims on #3 goalies last season.
I realize that was a somewhat extenuating circumstance, due to covid, but there is no saying that it can't happen again, so they are grabbing some insurance early, in case Mike DiPietro( who is waiver exempt)isn't ready to claim the backup position.
They basically signed a goalie that may or may not be with the team next season, at a whopping 50, 000 over league minimum.
At worst this kid stinks the joint out and gets sent to minors, with zero cap ramifications, at best he shines as a backup, DiPietro plays well in Abbotsford and the Canucks trade Martin for the coveted 3rd round pick, to a team that needs a goalie and Mikey D. Comes and replaces him.
Or they sign 57 year old Mike Smith as a back up and send Martin down during the pre-season spree and give Smith a bonus structure that goes into the following season, along with a NMC.
Hope that clears it up for you.👍
Edit, cap hit of 762 500. |

I don't think I could travel the earth and find 25 scallywags other than this group here, more excited about having Travis Dermott , Brad Richardson and Spencer Martin.
Benning has scarred you good .

Or they could acquire a veteran backup, over pay him and give him more term than necessary and then buy him out in the off season. |

Are you saying you have not learned a thing? - VANTEL
I learnt many years ago, never trust management and especially one who pays everyone but those who deserve to be paid.
This former GM paid Ben Hutton almost 3 million per season, the new GM brought in a guy that some have compared to Hutton, for half that price, at that same age.
I could go on and on and on about what I learnt about how to be a bad GM in the NHL, as the Canucks just went through the worst tenure in history.

But .
The last year of Hutton's contract he was paid 1.5 mil and the fans thought he was overpaid. They could not get rid of him fast enough. They found out you can pick up players like that as UFA for league minimum.

I mean, you are telling me what I already told others...
I'm sure they can bury him in the AHL if he doesn't work out. His salary wont exceed the cap relief.
