In case you didn’t know, Dermott keeps a bit of pride tape on his stick every game.

Why is this so important and meaningful to him?

“I actually had a family member that came out recently,” he explained. “I just try to support everyone, you never know what people are going through.

“It’s such a small gesture for me, but it’s such an easy thing I can do that I don’t think I’ll ever have a full grasp of what it can offer people if it’s a little bit of support, a little bit of comfort coming to the hockey rink for a game you love and maybe in the past, it hasn’t been a place that’s all-inclusive.

“That’s something I’m definitely willing to do if I can take five seconds out of my day and help a little kid out, there’s no thought, it’s a yes for sure. I try and take a step forward and be a louder voice in the room and try to learn as much as I can, I’m far from perfect but you try and be the best person you can be.”

Dermott’s gesture has made a strong impact.

“Other than the family, it’s (been tons of) messages on Instagram,” he said about the feedback he’s received. “You’ll have the odd donkey that messages you something stupid that his family wouldn’t be too proud of him if they read it, but the amount of positive messages I get from people I’ve never talked to, never will talk to probably, but just telling me they feel a little more comfortable waking up every day, going to the rink just because there are some people taking a step forward to show that it’s going to be an inclusive place, if we’re not there yet, we’re working on it.

“And those little messages — I’d probably do it without it, but they do make it hit your heart a little bit.”
