There is no rush to name a captain. I go next year without one. Lets see how year goes and how things develop. Rangers have no captain and they seem to be doing just fine without one and they certainly have many choices better then we do.

Provorov has little chance of being the next captain. If it won't be Couturier, it will be Scott Laughton with Hayes an outside possibility.

Couturier, by the way, is not "always hurt". Before this season, the last time he missed a huge chunk of a season was in 2016-17. From 2017-18 through 2019-20, he missed a total of two games. Last season, he suffered a Costochondral separation in the second game of the season but after he got back in the lineup he was there the rest of the season and won the Bobby Clarke Trophy.

I like Provy for captain, but agree with Bill that it will not likely happen. How about Provy for team training and strength coach? If we could get the entire team on his conditioning program, perhaps the injuries would lessen and durability improve. While thats not panacea for a poopy power play, it would be nice to have more skaters with the durability of G and Provy. It does seem like we are taking more than our fair share of injuries and relapses.

Drafted college players are usually OK. It's those undrafted UFAs that you gotta be wary of.

I remember when the Hobey Baker award was a kiss of death at the next level.

Now you have winners and finalists jumping into the NHL and becoming superstars/stars right away. Boldy, Fox, Q Hughes, Demko, Ghost, Hayes, Krug and Hyman along with the guys you named.

The college game in many ways is as high quality or better than the Juniors. At least in terms of playing against men. Guys who are 21, 22 years old. The level of play has been steadily getting better for years now as more and more good players choose that path.

The pool of elite American players keeps growing and fewer of them are going to Canada now. Stay closer to home, get your education, and have more leverage b/c there's always the threat of finishing college and going UFA.

The only downside is that you end up playing fewer games and practicing more, but that might actually be a pro at that age.

The captain decision will likely be dictated by the marketing side of things. Couturier or Hayes are going to be men handed the letter. For a team struggling to attract fans, I cannot see them going with Laughton.

It is a little funny to see Couturier mentioned, when apparently Giroux was labelled as being too quiet in the role.

Claude would be the easy answer, but we must remember the Flyers chose to allocate cap space to Ristolainen for multiple seasons, instead of bringing back Giroux to finish his career in Philadelphia.

Not sure if anyone listens, but on Snow the Goalie they mentioned how JVR is most definitely not back next season.

That they team would buy out the contract if they cannot move him.

I understand he can be a frustrating player at times but I'd be more in the camp of keeping him, and trying to gain assets at the deadline with max retention.

Based on Fletcher’s track record I’m sure he will make the right call on the new leadership/ captain😗

If he doesn’t come back, he doesn’t come back. It’s fine. There has been a lot of talk of sitting him lately, I feel like JvR has benefited somewhat since Giroux was traded. JvR has never been that ideal “power forward” but I’ve never agreed with him being so low in the line up next to Scott Laughton, Oskar Lindblom or Tyler Pitlick with second unit PP time but with Couturier hurt and Giroux traded, I feel like JvR’s production has quietly gone up.

buying him out will be just another impatient move by management. They're not going to be legit contenders next year, just ride it out next year if you can't trade him while retaining money and not giving up additional assets and be done with him.

It's because he was a late birthday player and later spent a season in NCAA transfer protocol.

I think when we drafted him we all knew he was a project but at this point 6 years later he should on the phantoms working for a spot on the flyers.

Seems like a wasted 1st to me.

Let’s be honest. If Obrien showed that he was anywhere near ready for the pros over the past 4 seasons the Flyers would have sought an ELC. But he hasn’t so he will be playing his 5th season of post draft hockey next season still an amateur. Very unusual for a first round pick.

He was drafted in the 2018 draft. The current year is 2022.
