It makes sense on why Buffalo targeted Levi in a trade if they had an idea that Portillo was going to go this route.
- ImThatGuy

Then why’d they pass on both goalies in the draft last year? They have still left a huge hole in the goalie pipeline. Did Rosen project that much higher vs. the first goalie off the board?

It sounded like Gerbe was confident the bull would sign. And if I recall correctly, Johnson too. He did not seem to be worrying.

Yeah he also said Levi was signing. Power was obviously gonna sign and he went 0-3 on the rest.

Well both Cossa and Wallstadt have played really well this year, while Rosen has hardly even played. Not that it's super concerning as the SHL rarely plays teenagers over older guys, but next year will be a good indicator of if it was the right move.

Losing Portillo, Johnson, and Peterson through the NCAA loophole is starting to get annoying. Spending a first round pick and not signing the guy when he shows promise in Johnson is about the most Buffalo thing I think I've heard in a long time, very unfortunately.

Kind of wish they would implement some rule that you get a compensation pick like they do in baseball

That's what would make the most sense. When players take 3-4 years to develop, you have to have some consolation for teams that get dropped repeatedly (small market teams). All together we may lose 3 starting goalies and a top4 D within a decade, but were not the beneficiaries of a single signing of that fashion. That would indicate the system is flawed. That's the way to fix it easily.

Would also think there would be some sort of a push back from the players. Like Taylor Ward (dixons son)
undrafted comes in and plays right away for Ontario. There has to be some kids who aren't too happy about that.

So before it's been guys like Vesey, who yes showed NHL promise, and no chance he was gonna sign early. Johnson has been on the sign and watch list for 2 straight years now, and didn't/hasn't. Wonder if a first rounder forces some sort of change.

This was a long time thought of mine with no facts to back up.... Every guy who doesn't sign I believe were always later round picks. I dont know that for a fact but what comes to mind does...... I cant think of any top 2 round picks who did this, Vesey was a 3rd

no doubt

make them sit out a year if they do not want to sign with the team that drafts them, not 30 days

I know he's from Cali area, but Idk if that makes LA the obvious choice. I mean, he choose to come to Sioux Falls, SD for USHL and committed to Minnesota for NCAA. Would seem he's open to being anywhere, as could have pretty much picked where he went.
