There's no to be fair about losing (potentially) Johnson for nothing (or a potential 3rd rounder). Max rookie deals are squabbling over 50K? And Buffalo is willing to potentially let him walk for that? If that's the case, this organization deserves everything terrible to happen to them. Imagine letting a first round pick leave because you won't pay a max rookie deal. - SDSabre
If that's the case its disgusting on the owners part.

This was a long time thought of mine with no facts to back up.... Every guy who doesn't sign I believe were always later round picks. I dont know that for a fact but what comes to mind does...... I cant think of any top 2 round picks who did this, Vesey was a 3rd - hubie
Kevin Hayes did it to Chicago. He was a late first so they got a compensatory 2nd round pick for him which they wasted. It's at the end of the 2nd round. |

isnt it 925K max?
If the Sabres are not willing to offer that, than this team is in more trouble than we think. - ImThatGuy
Loos like it's $916,667 now, which includes up to a $92,500. Two way deal with 80k in the minors. Up to 850k in Type A bonuses and 2m of Type B bonuses.
It would be extremely unlikely (maybe even unprecedented) for Johnson to get Type B bonuses. So, the only real negotiation here is on Type A bonuses.
Cap Friendly is showing that Power didn't get his full bonuses. If that's true, it shocks me.

"For college NCAA players that have been drafted, NHL teams retain their rights until 30 days after the player has left college.
A team that does not sign a first-round draft pick receives a compensatory pick in a future draft upon losing the rights to that player, determined on a case-by-case basis"
Looks like there would be some compensation, and it's a case-by-case basis. My guess is that 2nd rounder is as high as they go, and with how low (last pick in the first round) Johnson was, I'd imagine he'd garner something much lower. [/img]
EDIT:
This article is older, it appears you get a 2nd rounder in the same slot in which the original player was selected in the 1st round. So Johnson would garner pick 31 in the second round of the 2024 draft. cool. |

either way we will probably end up picking some worthless player who isn't worth signing (see karabacek) while johnson goes on to have a 10 year nhl career with 3 all star game appearances. |

That's what I'm seeing, and wouldn't be until 2024. What an absolute mess that'll be. |

Pick 63 and the 6th rounder for colin Robert miller, could have moved us to pick 61.

Possible there's some fine print somewhere. Hate that we might find out.

Tampa, Carolina, and Florida are three of the deepest and toughest teams in the East and the entire league. No shame in dropping games against that gauntlet.

Lol, those reasons are easy.
At least I didn’t double and triple down on Cozens being a 4th liner.
That’s looking swell as he’s closing in on 50 points as a 20 year old on the third line - sbroads24
