Thanks Carol, great job as usual!
“Why trading Quinn Hughes this off season is the most impactful thing this management group could do to right the Canucks ship”
Personally, I think the notion of trading away one of the best young defensemen in the league is ludicrous, but here we are, and I’m going to make a case for it. Spoiler alert, it’s not for the reasons Rueby thinks.
The problem with Hughes is OEL. The worst mistake that Jim Benning made was his last ditch effort to get to the playoffs. OEL isn’t a terrible player or anything, but he is certainly not providing good value on a $7+m cap hit for the next bazillion years. He is basically untradeable unless you are willing to take back an equally bad contract (Carey Price), or pay a hefty fee (draft selections). So, in order to maximize what you get from OEL over the life of his contract you need to put him in the best position possible, which is:
Get him a legitimate right side partner that can play big minutes and cover for him/compliment him.
Give him prime power play time so that his counting stats and overall contribution are what you would expect from a $7+m player. When Hughes was out OEL did a fine job of manning the point, and like Edler before Hughes, he’ll do a fine job for a few years yet to come (better than Edler likely as he can actually get his shot through).
What do the Canucks need back in a Hughes trade? Three main pieces are a must. 1 a cost controlled right side D with potential to play top 4. 2 a high quality center prospect with top 6 potential. 3 a first round pick. Additional picks would be great, but this is the minimum needed to make this deal.
Ideally you could do this at the draft so you could get a 2022 selection, and a team that looking to make a splash would be willing to offer more.
Additionally, this move frees up $7m in cap space (less what the incoming D gets) allowing you to add either in free agency or via another trade.
Do I want to trade Hughes? Hell no, but to me it’s the best way to improve the team and get the maximum value out of OEL while he’s here.
“What the Canucks should do with JT Miller” in my next blog. Stay tuned. - 1970vintage
If it's me, I'm trading Boeser/Miller or even Petey first before Hughes, as if you trade Hughes you don't have a D-man that can skate and move the puck up ice. OEL, Myers, Poolman, Schenn and Dermott aren't very mobile or fast and you're giving up a TON of offense.

That is what they do here . Always trading off best forwards best D best goalies. Like Lordie said before thank Christ these guys don't run the show.

Bo Horvat suffered a lower body injury last night. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
Nils Höglander underwent successful surgery to repair a core muscle/groin injury. There is no timeline for his return. |

The point is that you’re stuck with OEL, so to get the most out of him while he’s here, you need to give him more opportunity to be the player he was, instead of some shut down role.
Trading Boeser, or Miller, or Horvat or Garland, or Pettersson doesn’t accomplish that for you. I’m not saying there aren’t moves that also need to be made elsewhere, but to get the best of OEL for the next half decade this a solution that accomplishes that. |

Not sure about rage quit but now that you and Rosterhawk are besties when the season is over I might visit less . I am not sure how much of the two of your combined brain power I want to waste a summer on . If I want to see stuff as ridiculous as what you and your BFF spew out I can just turn on Beavis and Butthead. |

You guys have really got to learn the difference between taunting and caring. It really is hilarious how (I want to say idiotic but I will tone it down) stupid it is to see a fan base slurp over a guy that does nothing. Benning really scarred a lot of you.
The funny part is Alvie and the do nothings planned this for months according to him. Now that is a serious failure on the new diverse management.
Anyways it is hard to get mad at a player that is invisible but it is sure funny as hell to see all you hockey experts fixing the Canucks problems . Cmon Neemsie let me have my fun. I think if Canucks are serious about taking a run at the cup next year maybe they can figure a way to bring back Troy Stecher

I’m not above a little taunting, as you know. But I like facts and unfortunately for you Dermott has been very good. I know it hurts, but I’ve had to admit Myers has had a good year many times. Sometimes it happens. He’s not worth 6 mil though dammit, I will die on that hill. |

Well you are very wrong. They did nothing to improve .
They could have saved that money and used it on a player that has an impact in the summer. It shows how fragile this fan base is if they think Dermott has made an impact on Canucks. You guys really need to watch other teams and see what good hockey is .
Dermott has done nothing. No big hits , no great passes for an exceptional goal, no great scoring chances. Over all he has done nothing but fill in minutes that was no different than before the acquisition.
He hasn't hurt the team but he also hasn't helped the team. |

He’s defended well. I know it’s hard because since Tanev we haven’t seen much defending, but it’s possible |

Canucks last 5 wins have been against non playoff teams.
Right now Canucks are a bubble team and have to improve. They need to shed some players and bring in better players. Concentrate on players to upgrade like the middle 6 IMO.
Ship out guys like Highmore Motte (yes he is gone) Dikie . I would look at moving Boeser . Concentrate on upgrading the middle .

I think you are being idiotic in your takes, in regards to Dermott. I haven't heard anyone slurping about Dermott, other than saying he looks decent enough.
You are ridiculing some for biting, yet when someone throws out the bait, by making a Dermott comment, you bite, and bite hard.
Then go on a 76 page of ranting about this new management group, who have made some pretty insignificant moves, yet you want to believe they are significant for some stupid reason, other than the trolling aspect.

I don't respond to your posts because I don't think you are very smart when it comes to hockey. Let me take that back I just don't think you are very smart at all. You really have very little that I think I would find informative.
Sorry if your feelings are hurt that a complete stranger has no interest in your thoughts. Aside from Nighthawk I have you are the next person that knows very little about hockey and trust me it was a close race. - VANTEL
Feelings not hurt. Just happy that you keep ignoring me like you go on about all the time.

Jonathan Huberdeau with three points tonight, including his 30th goal, he’s now only two points (108 total) behind McDavid for the Art Ross trophy. For me, he’s the league MVP and should win the Hart trophy. |

You want to make a #3 the best defender on the team. With no help.
I really thought we were supposed to make the team better instead of a single player. |

I'm picking the Panther's as the eastern finalists. I'm basing my playoff pool picks on that.
Can't wait for the 1st round, best hockey of the year! |
