If Woo and Rathbone make it you’re half way there I guess. But from this year’s draft to contributing in a meaningful way it’s at least 4 years no? - 1970vintage
There are still players under contract.
There's no real time line for prospects. The real big leaps in improvement seem to be done mostly in the off season. You hope that everything is a big clear picture but it just doesn't work that way for prospects.
You are also generally trying to find a strong top 4. Never going to find 4 Victor Hedman on the same roster. |

The question I would pose then, why do they HAVE to move one of them?
Your position on trading Hughes in the first place is to maximize/get full value out of OEL.... he's clearly not worth the 7 they're paying him, so what is he worth right now, as he fits in the team? Probably around 4.5? So you're at -2.5/3 mil... finding/trading for young players who are on ELC/cheaper contracts that have surplus value helps even that out.
Plus, OEL is a great insurance if Hughes goes down for a bit. He's proved he can step in to QB the first powerplay. That's added value to the team/his contract.
I think they can definitely work out a team with Hughes and OEL on it. They have overlapping skillsets, for sure, and Rathbone is basically the same mold all on the left side which may be a problem, but I don't think they HAVE to get rid of one to make the D work. - NewYorkNuck
Obviously they don’t HAVE to move anyone. There are so many holes elsewhere in the lineup, and guys who are due a payday if they stay, I don’t see how you get good value out of OEL if he’s playing behind Hughes. I see lots of opposition to trading Hughes, but no good arguments why not. “What if OEL gets hurt”? “Teams rarely get better trading their best player”. These aren’t really reasons. Hughes could get hurt, and sometimes teams do get better.
Anyway, some big games tonight. Oilers v Knights, someone has to get two points. Kings v Blue Jackets, probably their toughest game left (except the Canucks). Stars v Sharks. On paper it’s a slam dunk, but you never know. |

Given each D man will have 1 more year here under the belt & BB is likely to get a training camp & fresh start is a reason we should see improved D play. How much is too hard to say. Add in Bones & possible other prospects there is reason for some optimism. I’m not set on big hopes but it is more than a possibility. There was a good point top heavy on the left side for offence type D & remains we need a top 4 RHD difference maker to move to the next level. I’d like to see Hughes play RS & see if that helps. |

My question is, what would you rate/value OEL right now in terms of cap hit? We all agree he's not worth 7, but what do you think a going rate for him right now is? |

I don’t know how you effectively rank an nhl salary anymore. The salary structure is absolutely insane. Check it out:

In a world where Victor Hedman makes an average of $7.8m, what is any defenceman worth? Using a “Hedman scale”, OEL should be $4.5m? |

It all depends on what his role on the team is. My premise is that if he’s your #1 LHD, runs PP1, plays in all situations and 22ish min a night and likely nets you 40-50 points then he’s worth his full cap hit.
In his current role, as the 22 min shut down PK PP2 guy he’s a 20-30 point guy and that’s probably worth $4.5-5.0m? He’s basically got the exact same stat line as Tanev… |

I think OEL is worth about 4.5ish right now, ya. Maybe 5 compared to what contracts are signed for nowadays. So the Canucks are sitting at around a 2.5ish deficit right now with him compared to his cap. At that point, is trading a franchise D worth squeezing 2.5ish in cap out of an aging D man? Especially as the cap increases over time? IMO, no, unless the offer for him is a gross overpayment.
I think one big problem is having OEL and Myers as deficits on the team. A team can handle one, but having both on the back end is problematic. |

I actually think that given the Oilers remaining schedule, it’s more likely for the Canucks to catch them than the Kings. |
