I get the premise that contending teams run into cap issues and manage them out of necessity. Non-playoff teams shouldn't be, like the Sabres of recent history.

I don’t think the salary cap is as big of a concern to those teams who seem to find a way to add every deadline, never have to trade key players away except for once in a blue moon.

The absolute #1 priority of the Sabres should be to get more good players and worry about that stuff if it ever needs to be worried about.

There’s a large difference between not wanting to pay bad players a lot of money (what we did for years) and worrying about paying too many good ones.
