Watching Ehlers is a treat! I was thinking about how underutilizes he is and thought it would be fun to compare him to Laine.
This season:
Patrik Laine:
56gp 26g 30a 56points. He averages 18:50/game.
Nikolaj Ehlers:
59gp 27g 25a 52points. He averages 18:10/game.
Imagine if Ehlers was given the same amount of PP time as Laine, his stats surely would have been greater. People on this board have claimed that Laine was “generational” and said that he for sure would score 50. I am thinking that if that truly is the case, than Ehlers too should be a “shoe-in” for 50. I think Ehlers with a full season on Scheifele’s wing and getting ample power play time scores 50. Hopefully the new coach can see that! - TheUltimateJet
Scheifele + Ehlers is a number 1 line. Scheifele + Wheeler is not

No sorry, I was asking not to exaggerate if Jacob answers your question.
You didn’t exaggerate on your previous post. - Ross77
No worries! I think its a great question though. |

Hard to compare Ehlers to Laine.
One generates offence, the other must be fed the puck.
Different players.
I will say this, Laine is a long long long way from being Ovechkin like. |

Let’s make this a mailbag question.
Jacob could you help us out with this question? I would be curious to see what offense is like with Scheifele as opposed to what it is like without Scheifele. Please do include opposition as well (whether they are above 500 and what not).
Thanks Jacob! - TheUltimateJet
I like this one a lot. I will copy this down before I update this board. I should have another article out this afternoon, or tomorrow morning. I will make sure this question is saved. Thanks!

Without doing any research, I can tell you that the Jets are a much more dangerous team offensively with Scheifele in the line-up. No question!
But the question is, are they a "better" team? with him in the line-up? His effort, or lack of same defensively is not conducive to winning NHL games IMO. If this lack of effort is due to injury or personal reason, he gets a pass. Otherwise not!
And, don't get me wrong, love the guy the way he comes across, and wear my Scheiefele t-shirt with pride. But maybe time to cit bait? Maybe he wants out? |

100% the Jets are a better team with Scheifele in the line-up. Let’s be honest here, I know that Jets fans have fallen in-love with PLD, however PLD has not showed me anything that he is ready to be a true #1 Center. His production since coach Lowry took over has not been very good. We all know that coach Lowry has poor systems and despite them, Scheifele has continuously produced.
This idea that we will be better without Scheifele and we will get this miraculous package for him does not make any sense whatsoever (because all we will get is futures). If Scheifele is gone we are in a rebuild, might as well start looking for new homes for Hellebyuck and Morrissey as well. Chevy has already tried the hybrid rebuild and all we have gotten from that is one great season in 11. Less than 10% successful. |

Certainly I agree with some of your points. Some want to tweak the line-up, others want a major change.
Looking ahead, right now we have $16m in cap space with 8 forwards signed, and no back-up goalie. Say you give PLD $7M and Comrie, oh #1M, that leaves about $8M to sign 5 forwards. Not going to get much quality there.
Do you want to basically go back into next season status quo - and hope the new coaching staff makes all the difference?
If not, which major player (salary) should we try deleting?

I think the roster is mostly set. Jets re-sign Appleton, Svech, and Harkins promote Gustafsson and get Perfetti healthy. Then it's just bring back Stastny or get one of Chevy's classic mediocre vets.
But to answer your question I don't see the problem with just banking on a coaching change next year. Best case Scheifele looks engaged defense improves, Helle back to Vezina quality goaltending, Jets back to contender status. Worst case nothing improves, then you know there are serious problems with the team and you can gut it and go full rebuild.

This is the way to handle the off-season. So many that didn't meet expectations (and then copp goes to NY and lights it up) - its got to be an external factor such as coaching that is putting a drag on performance. There were too many disappointments to trade them all away - fix it at the top instead.
