I like Garland and don't mind OEL though he is not worth the salary. He has bad knees . Maybe that comes into play in two years like Shea Weber's injury. For now they can still use him. - VANTEL
Getting nothing for OEL would be bad, worst possible outcome of that trade. |

I don't look at OEL as the main component of the trade. I know you have mentioned about buying him out after next year.
I look at the OEL trade for Roussel Eriksson and Beagle . I knew OEL would be a short term service like 3-4 years. Canucks need to figure out how to Kucherov him . LTIR for the year and use in the playoffs for a year or two.
Garland was for the first round pick and he has been worth it IMO. He creates a lot of chances and is a good cap hit for what he brings . He will be close to 50 pts this year .

I agree, leave the good players alone, improve the depth imo. |

If you look at it that way then Benning in draft pick value paid near double for Garland than he did Miller.
Using Weber as an example is not good. Look where MTL is right now. When you take on anchor contracts, you get something in return. Instead the Benning paid to take on a bad contract. |

How you planning on doing that with no cap space? |

If you look at the opposite of Mtl , TB did very well by using that system. I still think OEL has at least two more good years. Lets face it Mtl were very fortunate to have the success they did the year before. They barely made it into the playoffs.

I honestly don't care about trading picks especially with this new group of rookies. I just get a woody because these snowflakes for 8 years have cried about moving draft picks and now that someone other than Benning does it and they are all slurping.
Benning built a good team.

If you want to use TB. They traded Miller and won a cup.
LTIR makes zero difference if you have no depth or a team that isn't good enough.

He built a good AHL team as well, they are on fire, add podz, petan, dries, Lockwood could be a Calder cup championship. |

I will say again OEL is going nowhere for at least 2 years . In two years Canucks will have more cap space and can acquire other players and do what TB did burying him for the year and bringing him in the playoffs.

You've gone out of your way to use LTIR to be like TB. You just neglected all the steps TB took to get there. |

We tried something like that with Luongo... now we're FINALLY going to be out from under that recapture penalty... I can see if we did something like that, Bettman making an "OEL rule" and screwing us over again. |

Same as buying him out as you suggested takes steps also. You would need to replace him and his minutes . It would also extend the OEL payment for a number of years.

TB trades for and trades away and is always acquiring something. Drouin didn't work out. Traded him for a defender plus a pick. Connelly never worked out. Traded him for 2- 2nds. They have traded down to acquire more picks.
That 7th round pick Van traded with Garrison for a 2nd was used to move up a single spot to grab Brayden Point.
28th traded down to 33 to grab another 3rd for Anthony Cirelli.
Deangelo for Hajek. Hajek used in acquiring Miller and McDonaugh both on good contracts with a bit of term left. Miller then used for 1st and 3rd and 1st used to get Coleman to win a cup.
10th overall Slater Koekkeok traded for JAn Rutta.
Ben Bishop acquired for a 4th round pick, traded for Cernak.
Benning (frank)ed the whole thing up by trading for OEL and Garland. |
