The other factor in that disallowed goal in Rags vs Pens game is where the goalie was in the crease. It's not like he was at the top of the paint.. he was deep in his crease and got creamed. as you guys said earlier.. they can't really allow that type of goal to stand. It would declare open season on the goalies... they have called back goals for far less than that in the playoffs recently too... We all remember Lee's goal in Game 1 vs Carolina.. he was no in crease and goalie initiated contact. |

He's still a good player, invisible in two playoff games maybe...but still good.
The issue is really that they could have spent that $11M in a much more productive way that rounded out the roster. Their depth up front would still be solid without him and they could've been paying a much better goaltender and a solid defenseman and probably could have kept Kadri around (at least until this season ends).
Tavares was like buying a Mercedes when you had pipes leaking in your house. - eichiefs9
I'm fine with it. Anything that makes it harder for the Leafs to win is good in my book. |

He's still pretty much a point per game player, so I don't know if it's that bad. - JimmyP
I'm not saying he's bad, because of course he isn't. He just shies away from contact for the most part. He can definitely still put the puck in the net. |

I don't think anyone is saying he's a bad player. The question is over his contract and if he's living up to it. |

The Leafs and Tavares both get what they deserve. My wish is that neither one is successful throughout this contract agreement. Furthermore I hope Tavares wins nothing for the rest of his career. - Nfdbulldawg
Although I don’t think of half season Stanley Cups as really legit, Tavares would’ve gotten one last year and maybe even the year before. He’ll ultimately realize he made a terrible decision.
All that to say, his per season salary is at least $2m too high and his contract will become a substantial albatross. |

As slow and awful as Chara was at times this year. He was no where close to how bad Brian Boyle is at this point. WTF are the Pens coaches thinking? It's actually comical to watch Fox embarrass him constantly. He is 37 years old and literally doesn't bring ANYTHING to the table. He doesn't hit, can't skate, and can't fight.. why would u put him in the line-up? |

I don't necessarily agree with that. Keeping him in the fold almost certainly means no Pageau. Maybe as a rental for one playoff run, but not with the extension. It would have had more ripple effect on the roster as well. |

We most likely wouldn’t have signed Komarov, resigned Bailey, or Martin could’ve been a net positive. |

Snow signed Bailey to his extension midway through the season before Tavares became a free agent. Snow thought Bailey's signing could help entice Tavares to stay on Long Island, as they are supposed to be good friends.

Ahh could’ve sworn it was Lou. Either way I take my chance with whatever lineup difference we would’ve had with Tavares. Tavares, Barzal, Nelson, cizikas, is some pretty sick center depth imo. |

I’ll also add can’t really question our results the last couple of years but wonder what we would’ve been like had we not lost Tavares? Could’ve been worse who knows? I just think having that extra shot of offense could potentially have helped but it very well may have detracted from the overall team… |

Sure, if not for the cap hit, the team would have benefitted from the extra offense. But the cap hit would have been disastrous, so I think he would have been a net negative. He's a good player getting superstar money. |

You could also look at it as spending the money on one good player rather then 3 below mediocre to crappy players
I say all of this not missing the guy or regretting how things played out. That contract is going to suck real soon for the Leafs. I’m aware. Still wonder what the team would look like and how much success/lack there of we would’ve had if he stayed. |

Which 3? Bailey was already signed. The other 2 you named (Komarov and Martin) had combined cap hits of $5.5 MM, compared to at least $11 MM for JT. As chiefs pointed out, you probably can't sign Pageau if you sign JT. It might have been tough to squeeze the necessary raises in for our top pairing d-men, too.
I was disappointed when JT signed with the Leafs. I'm not any more. |

Like I said I have no regrets the way things turned out. Who knows who they would’ve signed but those two wouldn’t have come over from Toronto to start. If they signed him there obviously would have been a push to shed salary most likely Bailey or Eberle I would imagine. I’ll also add would you rather have Tavares or Pageau? Between salary and how the team performed with Pageau I guess that’s debatable.
I’m just wondering how the team would’ve looked or what kind of success they would have had if Tavares stayed? |

Wow the league needs to get a handle on goalie interference. Today in the Aves vs Preds game I thought for sure it would be no goal due to goalie interference and no it was a goal.
I just don’t get the difference between goalie interference and when it’s ok to hit the goalie |

Jimmy just posted the same thing in our blog. That makes absolutely no sense. How could they hold him solely responsible for what transpired? |

I have no answer for that, I don't understand this at all. Unless some sort of awful accusations come out against Trotz, which seems exceptionally unlikely, none of this makes any sense |
