Perhaps I could handle Arniel - Carlyle is definitely a "no go" in my books. - grahamzky
Another True North "alumnus" is also likely available - Vigneault.
I'd pass on him.

Chevy & scouts need to do better at the draft table.
After the 1st round, between 2011 - 2017, these are the proven NHL caliber picks:
2011 - Lowry
2012 - Hellebuyck
2013 - Copp, Poolman, Petan (?), Comrie (?)
2014 - nobody
2015 - Harkins, Appleton
2016 - nobody
2017 - Samberg (?)
One high-end player, Two solid 3rd liners, and a few journeymen.
(?) indicates that the jury is still out on these picks. - bennythehat
The “draft & develop” model that Chevy promised us has collapsed. This was a great list bennythehat. Goes to show how delusional some fans are in this market when they speak about Chevy’s excellent draft record.
If Chevy is not drafting in the top 20, he is not going to make a good draft pick. I think the Jets should trade away all their 2-7th round picks for the next 3 years because it is evident that nothing of significance will be drafted there. |

You’re way too harsh on their drafting. I know you don’t include 1st rounders, but that’s ridiculous not including that, as I’d suggest they draft well above average in that round. Several years they dealt their 2nd rounders to make deadline deals, also making your no 1st rounder rule look even harsher. If you want to criticize a draft and develop team for dealing away their picks, I guess that could be a valid criticism. |

The 2.0 Jets haven't ever traded away a 2nd round round pick in a deadline deal.
Their 2011 2nd was traded by Atlanta for Ladd, their 2014 2nd was traded in the prior summer for Setoguchi, their 2016 2nd was traded to Philly to move up four spots to select Stanley but they got a 3rd rounder back which was used on the unfortunately injury prone Luke Green, the Jets had two 2nd round picks in 2013 and missed on both of them, the Jets have in fact had most of their 2nd round picks they just haven't hit on any of them but hopefully Samberg, Torgersson, Gustafsson, Lundmark and hopefully one day Chibrikov change that, maybe even Comrie as perhaps he's a late bloomer. I'd also say they haven't utilized Harkins well in at the NHL level, if they had maybe he'd be a more useful player at this point, he's clearly shown some talent but is usually playing with the Lowry's and Toninato's so not much happens with them and guys look useless.
Maybe its all just a crap shoot but their drafting in rounds 2 and beyond hasn't been very good, other than Helle it looks not much better then any other teams really but even then lots of goalies are drafted in later rounds.
Even if this team found a later round gem they probably just put him on Lowry's wing and try to turn him into a good grinder cause that's just whats gonna work in Winnipeg don'tcha know... 🤔😒🙄😆😂 |

I shouldn’t have said deadline deals in trading their 2nds, but assumed most would’ve been from that. I was just looking at their draft history, not at all looking at any trades, deadline or not.
Here’s a list of some pretty good post 1st rounders:
2011 3rd round Lowry
2012 5th round Hellebuyck
2013 2nd round Comrie
4th round Copp
5th round Poolman
2014 nothing
2015 2nd Harkins
6th Appleton
7th Niku
2016 6th Berdin - we’ll see on this one?
2017 2nd Samberg
3rd Kovacevic - should get NHL opportunity
5th Gawanke - stretch but May see NHL service
2018 2nd Gustafson
3rd Nathan Smith

Some of those guys could still turn out like Gus and Samberg but other than Helle and Copp that's all replacement level players so nothing special really. |

That’s definitely true, but generally what you’d expect out of later round guys. The ones that do hit at a high level are likely most often goalies, late bloomers or under viewed Russians (or some other Europeans). |

I think Tampa Bay might challenge this narrative. I do believe that in order for the Jets to have any chance at success in this league, they have to draft 95% better than the rest of the league; especially given that many of my fellow Jets fans (me not included) believe “that no on wants to play in Winnipeg”. They also need to hit on more late round picks than any other team in the league. Their drafting and especially development has been average. I would even say below average.
This actually creates a great mailbox question: Jacob, in terms of developing prospects, is there a metric used to determine how successful teams are in developing prospects? I think this would need a tool using draft position to accurately figure out how well teams are doing. |

You don’t think players avoid Wpg?
Name a meaningful difference maker that signed for term when the team did NOT have control?
It’s not just WPG , most CDN teams struggle in free agency

Seeing how the media has started the campaign to run 55 out of town, many Canadian players avoid Canadian markets in general. Jason Spezza and Nazim Kadri are two names that come to mind. Spezza on his way out of Ottawa had nothing but nice things to say about Ottawa and wanted a USA market to avoid the media. Same with Kadri, when he vetoed the trade to Calgary.
I think if 55 is moved this offseason, we can officially begin looking at the sports media in this town as being toxic, especially towards superstar Canadian players. |

I think you make a great point about the Jets needing to be better than about 95% of the league in drafting in order to compete and be at the top of the league. I’d be curious to know (something we can never really know) how teams use later round picks. By that I mean are the Jets trying to make “safe” later picks trying to fill spots on the Moose with no real intent generally on getting NHLers. Say this vs. A team that consistently swings for the fences with higher risk picks, such as taking lots of Russians that may choose to play in the KHL for more $ they can earn compared to a later NHL draft pick that has to play multi seasons in the minors. |

Islanders fired Trotz. cue the Winnipeg rumor's.
heres the thing though, he will have multiple offers and they say he also wants a GM role??
im a little torn on Trotz, love his defensive systems and how quickly he can turn a teams D around. but am nervous about his love of vets and his lack of Offensive creativity which would not be good for ehers or villie!! |
|
|

Trotz was let go by the Islanders, really hope the Jets don't try to hire him, he has a lot of Maurice like tendencies that I'd rather not see again. |

Yeah I'd pass on Trotz, don't think his systems will work with this group and he makes some real questionable lineup decisions, Komarov on Barzal's wing while scratching Wahlstrom was a real head scratcher. |

I'm certainly a Barry Trotz fan, and hope he is da man. But understand where others are coming from when they say it might be boring hockey. Many have said we have to tighten up the defence to win, well, here's our chance.
Trotz has kind of been in situations when he didn't have a whole lot of offence to work with in Nashville and The Island (other than Barzal). The year he had offence in Washington, he won The Cup.
Maybe I'm out-voted here, but I hire Barry - if Barry's interested. |

I’ll second that!
When Maurice left the team, I said the season was a wash and the top priority was to sign Trotz as the head coach.
Hopefully he wants to come home.
Unfortunately, schief has gone off the deep end with his me first season ending interview. Really like schief and what he brings but not sure how an assistant captain, after making comments like he did can be part of the picture. Hopefully I am wrong in my thinking and he stays a jet for long term.

Far to much smoke and rumours about how this team
Has allowed wheeler and Shief to run everything. They are and have been the trouble with the locker room for far to long!!! And you can love Maurice the person. But paly, Chevy and Chipman are to blame for allowing it.

that is getting ahead of the facts to say that two people are the problem. What was said by Patrick, Greshner and Laidlaw (who don't know the name of the Ranger coach even though they once played for the Rangers) is that Eakins and Hayes point to a divided room with 2 camps lead by two individuals with players falling into one camp or the other. We assume the leaders are Scheifele and Wheeler but don't know if one of them is wrong/poor leadership and the other right/strong leadership, perhaps both are 'in the wrong'.
A young Patrick Laine shouldn't have had to deal with that poop, regardless of his own issues that he brought in.
What is surprising and disappointing is that Maurice and Chevy allowed this to fester without accountability and applying only band-aid fixes.

Let’s go down memory lane.
When this team relocated to Winnipeg, Lawless reported about “The Atlanta 5” as being the problem.
That attention shifted onto Evander Kane. Subsequently Kane wanted out of Winnipeg. Bogosian also wanted out of Winnipeg. And as such both were dealt. Kane had challenges no doubt, however he was bullied by “the 5”. I am also thinking that Bogo may also have been bullied by 33, in order for 33 to preserve his spot.
While the “Atlanta 5” was still running the room, Trouba (due to legal issues with his father did not want to play for a Canadian franchise) was selected. He wanted out of Winnipeg. He was also considered a problem then. I do though think he took a liking to the city once he developed a friendship with 55. He was also lucky that the franchise selected his best friend in Copp.
The “Atlanta 5” by this point had become the “Atlanta 4”. Ladd was dealt and Enstrom left under mysterious circumstances. He was very upset when he left Winnipeg. I remember Scheifele speaking about the time that Byfuglien invited him to the back of the plane to play cards with “the big boys”. This is where the indoctrination of good guy 55 turned into bully 55. Byfuglien and Wheeler were/are bullies.
Laine gets drafted by Winnipeg. He’s a nice guy. Some people called him “generational”. Laine goes off in a Finnish newspaper about how his offense was whack because he was playing with Bryan Little (Atlanta 5) member. His fate from that point on was sealed. He was a problem. He had to go to.
After Little got hurt only 2 members of the 5 remained. Even then something seemed to be amiss between the 2. Byfuglien ends up leaving this franchise under suspicious terms. I do believe that Trouba may have stayed if it were not for Big Buff. Trouba believed he was the number 1 right side D, but Buff (who had coach Maurice’s ear) disagreed. If Byfuglien bullied Kane and possibly Bogosian out of the locker room, what’s to say that he did not do the same to Trouba? Just some thoughts.
In the interim, the 5 have become 1. Even after the 2019 season when Scheifele clearly did not want to be at the press conference, 26 said “he would run through a brick wall” for Maurice. It seemed that Maurice and 26 were too close. 55 at that point to me checked out of the entire situation. For some reason since that point, something shifted for my boy. I also think that 26 and 33 may have felt threatened by 55’s new friendships he had created with Copp and Trouba. They must have felt they were losing influence in the room by that point. So Trouba for sure had to go then and he was dealt that offseason.
Now it does not matter. We still have 26 for 2 more years. We have even brought in his buddy 25. Sure 25 speaks a good game but he is close to Wheeler. This brings up more thoughts. Has 26 poisoned 27? 81? 37? 80? The list goes on.
Chevy’s biggest mistake ever was keeping the Atlanta guys around way too long. And, here he is the guy that’s going to correct the ship!
Forgot to add, I wonder how much of 26’s influence also rubbed 28 the wrong way that he also wanted out of Winnipeg. |
