Canuck Legend Jannik Hansen on sportsnet talking about the same thing. Players that are willing to make the right play and not the play that will pad his stat for his next contract. Playing for yourself instead of the team. - manvanfan

I’d say a pretty fair assessment by Drance. |

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, until the Canucks fix their defense they’re going to continue to be a bubble or wild card team.
Quinn Hughes is a really good offensive dman who sucks playing defensively,, but good at puck transition to the forwards. When they actually give him outs. That said, he’s more a # 5 offensive defenseman than he is Victor Hedman. Gotta fix that defense. - LeftCoaster

They're all pretty decent grades. OEL also got a B, but he was ranked before Myers probably because he's better
Oliver Ekman-Larsson: B
2021-22 Statistics: 79 GP, 5-24-29
It’s always hard to divorce a player’s performance from their actual cap hit, but Oliver Ekman-Larsson was never realistically expected to deliver full value on his $7.26 million number. For that, he would have had to be a stud No.1 defenseman. Ekman-Larsson obviously wasn’t that but he had a great bounce-back campaign on Vancouver’s second pair which was assigned to defend against top lines.
OEL didn’t have a huge year offensively but he made it up with strong, steady defensive play. Efficiency was the name of his game, both in terms of how he broke the puck out and defended the rush. The Canucks were around break-even in controlling five-on-five shots and scoring chances with him on the ice and finished with a narrowly positive goal differential which is impressive considering the quality of competition he faced alongside Tyler Myers.
Ekman-Larsson brought a ton of value to the table as a quality two-way matchup defender, even if those contributions fall short of his cap hit. |

Garland's was also interesting:
Conor Garland: B
2021-22 Statistics: 77 GP, 19-33-52
Conor Garland is an elite five-on-five forward. There’s no other way to slice it. Garland’s 47 five-on-five points tied him for 28th among all NHL forwards, outproducing the likes of Mikko Rantanen, Kyle Connor, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Sidney Crosby among others. He even tied Miller for the team-lead in five-on-five points despite playing three fewer games.
Garland emerged as the Canucks’ best down-low playmaker. He had 20 primary assists at five-on-five; the next best Canuck, Miller, only had 12. Garland’s distinguishing quality is how he leverages his elite edgework to twist and turn off checks. That skill draws defenders towards him, which creates more open ice for his teammates. From those situations, Garland displayed strong vision all year long in being able to set his linemates up for chances in the slot.
Garland made whoever he played with better last season with the evidence for that spanning beyond just the assist numbers. He was the Canucks’ best two-way possession driver, giving whatever line he was on a huge boost in terms of controlling shots and scoring chances.

Some people might roll their eyes when pointing to numbers related to play control or shot metrics but the truth is, Garland’s impact on driving play led to a huge advantage in actual goals. With Garland on the ice, the Canucks outscored opponents by 22 at five-on-five, the best goal share of all Canucks forwards.
Garland’s lack of power-play production — he managed just one goal and three points on the man advantage — is a legitimate knock against him. But he also had very little opportunity with the first unit so it’s hard to rate him too harshly on that basis alone. |

Cleaned out a closet in the basement this evening and found game programs for the April 15/82 Game 1 Division Finals against the LA Kings which the Canucks won 3-2 and the May 13/82 Game 3 Final against the Islanders which the Canucks lost 3-0 as well as an original Beaver Power Towel, taking a bite out of the Big Apple. |

He talked about that in an interview with Harman I posted here – he knows he really needs to work on his shot, so hopefully it improves for next season (if he's on this team or another one...) |

Trade Miller and Boeser. That way Garland will get PP1 time.
Sign Burakowsky and Nuchuskin to matching 8 year 6.5AAV deals. |

Surely Aquilini could get him a Lyft, and a longer stick might help too. Pretty hard to get to 93MPH with a mini stick. |

What happened to playoff Jonny last night?
Only 2 more years of Toffoli at 4.25 for a 30 point pace over 82 games. |

Boston is such a trash franchise. Running goalies, slashing them. They won once like that and still think it works. And the NHL is egging them on with these $5K fines for Marchand. The guy needs to be banned a full season and for life the next slew foot. (frank)ing rat. - micah555
It's remarkable that someone hasn't cross checked Marchand in the teeth yet. |
