lets walk this back a little: Stanley performed abysmally across a fairly broad range of metrics relative both to other Jets and when compared to other players in the league. Whatever those metrics actually measure they do not tell either the specifics of a player situation (injury, real life stress, usage, chemistry with teammates, confidence, illness, training curve, etc.). Neither do they define how the rest of a player's career will progress - a change in training routine, therapy, psychology, equipment, rules, team, coaches can impact performance significantly.

I am not saying Stanley will ever be a top pairing defenseman or even justify being picked in the 1st round but he made a case for himself to be part of an NHL lineup competing for third pairing icetime. He needs to improve before earning an everyday dman role. Projecting Kovacec, Gwanke ahead of him is a stretch because they have not played significant games yet. Heinola maybe, Samberg convinced me that yes he belongs. When Stanley was drafted the Jets took a chance on player that scouting believed had a higher ceiling than thier next preferred choice (whoever that may have been). So far the Jets are not proven correct but the pick is not a bust yet.

BTW...one of the Blackhawk players told me that the team to beat in the playoffs is the Blues. Said they were the toughest team to play against all season and are built for the playoffs. Kinda surprised me as I would have said it would be the Avs or Panthers. I guess we shall see. Also said the Wild were very tough so the winner of that series will be formidable.

the only reason Stanley is still a thing is Jets pride. They wasted a first round pick on him and now are giving him more time and chances than any other D in the system to try and save face. Every single current D on the Moose is more deserving and has had more success at the AHL level than Stanley, but its Stanley getting the extended chance.

I've heard the Chisholm/Gawanke pairing is having a great playoffs for the Moose.

Hopefully the organization gives both those guys a legit chance with the big club, both are really smooth skating dmen, Gawanke looks to be a more average NHL dman size too and is a RHD which always seems to be at a premium.

Interestingly:

" I don't see a Winnipeg Jet line-up next season with Mark Scheifele in it." - Darren Dreger

Neither do I!

Darren Dreger may be wrong occasionally, but seems to usually get most of his inside scoops correct. He does have connections.

On the other hand...isn't that Tarasenko playing for the Blues in the 2nd round ? Pretty sure he wanted out at the end of last year.

That's true. They're still saying he wants out. I guess one never knows, eh?

People do make mistakes.

I heard Leah Hextall interviewed by Jim Toth a few games into the playoffs but after Scheifele's comments, she's covering one of the series and forgive me cause I'm paraphrasing but Toth asked her if she'd been asked by others in hockey media about what was going on in Winnipeg following Scheifele's comments and her response was no, its well known across NHL media that the Jets have had locker room problems since 2018 and they're just now finally leaking out.

It was obvious something went down in 18-19 that caused that season to go down the drain but were these issues there in the 17-18 season when they went to the conference final??

They signed Matt Hendricks late in the summer of 2017 which makes me wonder how far back do these locker room issues go?? They had to of signed a guy known for his character and leadership cause that's what they needed in that broken room, they weren't signing a 36 year old UFA that late in the summer for his playing ability.

I don’t think this is a great mystery.

Wheeler has a massive ego and is know around the league as abrasive and bit of an ass by people that have to deal with him. Sometimes people think they’re focussed and committed while acting like a wiener.

Scheifele is not the wide-eyed kid we watch grow up here. A couple of years ago things changed. Bigger contracts being signed and he is eager to have a 55-brand and Wpg is a small market.

Everyone is entitled to bad days, bad stretches but these guys are not what you would call “go through a wall” type of team first leaders.

It isn’t team first when the caveat is it has to be YOUR WAY- team first only
