That's a good point, probably resign Lanky just for that

The result of the Draft lottery: Montreal will select their missing center and trade the former #1 drafted center Drouin. He has been missing too

sucks to win #1 this year

Is there a "generational player" in this draft class?
There isn't a Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews level player at the top of the draft. But fans of struggling teams were happy to feel "Pain for Shane" this season.

Center Shane Wright of Kingston in the Ontario Hockey League is projected to go first overall. While he isn't a "generational talent," his strong two-way game has earned comparisons to Patrice Bergeron, which is a good neighborhood in which to live.

There are too many better opportunities for him elsewhere, why come here and wait 3 - 5 years to and hope this team makes to the playoffs.

Bullet dodged….

When’s the 2023 draft lottery?

Can’t wait!

Exhale.

Yeah, I was hoping for awhile we came out unscathed, but for the life of me in a deal that big of departures on the Blackhawks I am ashamed that Stan Bowman didn't have the foresight to make picks protected so that if they won Shane Wright and Columbus was now in a position to select 2023, that there was nOT a second lottery protected along with the pick so it slipped to 2024.

Now let's hope

They don't go outside to add quality pieces, that Toews makes a decision and they hire
a placeholder coach, and only mke trades for youth, or none at all.

The opportunity to even pick sixth over all next season is a better one than this year, and besides the new scouts will be in place for 2023 also.

I know a lot of you might have thought I was just spouting off about the draft differences but it is a large one, even in terms of depth.

Granted the mid first third of the fIRST round in both draft classes will yield similar chances of developing a pretty nice player, but there is also a better chance that we improve after the Hagel Fleury departures, and the Tampa bay first round in the last third of the 2023 first round yield a TRUE first round type guy, unlike most drafts where the picks from 20+ on are basically part of a group of 15-20 players all ranked but basically second round concnesus guys.

So we do get two quality players next year, maybe more if we do win the lottery in 2023, because to me it is unfathomable that are not a top 9 bottom feeder.

But it is a stretch to try an compare Shane Wright to even the the top three junior players Connor Bedard, Adam Fanteili and Matvei Michkov.

All three are after, drive play constantly and are simply better without me trying to make a comparison between a kid out of junior and a future Hall of Fame player in Patrice Bergeron.

Hmmmm, who was Nail Yakupov compared to.....Pavel Bure.

and by others he was compared to Alex Ovechkin.
look it up, I don't lie.

Connor Bedard plays and reads at a super quick speed, no hesitation.

Fantilli is 6' 3 and 193 bigger stronger faster and creative centre who drives the play, leads the retires and has no problem dishing and setting up to take the shot later.

These two are 2 way players whose gifts let them handle defense with skills.

I have been doing 7 round Mock drafts with profiles for easily one twenty years and I always shy away from trying to mark the prospect with similar skills as REAL players, because they are not real players yet.

I hope Shane wright exceeds all the expectations, but no tears that we are forced to take him, even if some soul wanted to bring to light his defensive acumen besides his scoring ability. He is truly not as fast, as quick headed as the 2023 triumvirate or many who will be there in the 2023 top ten.

I thought the neighborhood I grew up in was a pretty good one, only to find out later it pretty slummy. The first floor flat had rats coming in. Luckily we lived on the second floor. I liked 1901 W Superior a lot. And Montreal is happy for the new asset, another centre.
I think we wouldn't have turned down Shane Wright, but we didn't like the way the trade further forced the Blackhawks hand.

I enjoy the banter tnt has with Biz and Tocchet going back and forth about to shoot or not to shoot for the empty net goal. Good stuff

Tochett calling him an idiot and Biz saying you were so close to interviewing with the Islanders

- BetweenTheDots

I heard that Rick Tocchet was a terrible coach, no long term plan or brains to formulate things and the other coaches did the tasks.

Someone else told me he was really team guy who the team likes, but the results were putrid.

Tocchet would be fine, but I'd be fine with King. Wouldn't be surprised to see this team come out with a hot start and screw their chances of getting one of the top 3 picks. They're better already by not having Gusto or deHaan under contract

I seem to be in the minority here, but I would have taken this year’s #1. Yes, I understand that the ‘22 crop is supposedly inferior to next year’s crop, but nothing is guaranteed in life or sports. What if next year a 20 goal scorer turns into a 50 goal scorer(NY’s Kreider), what if they sign a goalie and he stands on his head, what if our young defensemen form a wall in the back end and their GA’s are dramatically reduced. I know that these scenarios are not probable, but they’re possible. Water under the bridge now, let’s hope most of you are right and we get a couple of good ones next year.

4 on 4 hockey is better than 5 v 5. Plus, it would give coaches the chance to go 3F/1D, 2/2 or 1F/3D when protecting a lead late.

Players are bigger and faster than ever, yet the rink remains the same size. Either go 4v4 or adopt the international ice surface.

BTW, when ice hockey started in Montreal in 1875, it was played between two 9 player teams. So things can change.

I don’t know how anyone can feel truly good one way or the other about this outcome. Hawks might end up with a worse pick next year.

I was thinking the same thing. I think Dach, Raddish as well as whomever we sign, bring up (or bring back in the form of Kubalik and/or Kurashev) will contribute more secondary scoring next year.

I still can't imagine making the playoffs but if Kane and the Cat are in the line-up, we get average goaltending we should still fall in the 7-10 maybe 12ish range.

That said, I believe the 7-12 range would still be better than the 6 we had this year.

One of the things I love about baseball is the different personalities of the Ballparks. Part of that is aesthetics obviously, but part of it is that each stadium has its own geometry/set of dimensions. Couldn’t truly be emulated in the NHL to the same extent, but I’d be in favor of setting a minimum/maximum width, and a minimum/maximum length and letting each team build its rink to its own liking. Could dramatically change the strategy of how to build a team. Not every team would be ideally suited to play on each sheet of ice.

When you take a kid close 20 overall like Chris Kreider and are still paying him just 4 million you win.

Just don't confuse building a franchise over with taking a kid that is a consensus star with a guy who is coming out of a prep school. I wrote this on Kreider then and I just saw it on MY NHL draft .com w/o my permission but read;

Chris Kreider Profile
Ht/Wt: 6' 2"/200 lbs
Position: C
Team: Andover (MA - HS)
Chris Kreider's Player Profile

Chris Kreider a dominating player, who dangles in tight spaces at high speed, cuts hard to the net, and is arguably one of the top skaters in this draft at any position.

He is so strong on the puck that if the opposition doesn't stop him in that neutral zone, they are gonna have bigger problems when Chris gets the the pistons at top churn. One stride to top speed. His downside is being from a New England Prep school, Phillips Andover, the competition is far less a measuring stick than players in Junior A.
Submitted by: Bill Placzek

The top seven that year are still factors
Scouting has prospect training conditioning is SO advanced now.
Back then, a Kreider was ahead on his training and preparedness and pretty consistent and suddenly the Rangers are loaded and he plays to a higher pinnacle.

- Scott1977

Soderblom should start in Rockford and play a few NHL games throughout the season. I think the Hawks need to move on from Delia, Lankinen might be ok as a backup but he’s not shown to be more than that.
