If Chicago is dead set on moving on from Patrick Kane, even assuming the NTC, there aren't many teams with enough cap space to take him on next year. His best option is to allow a trade to whatever team can afford him, and then walk that summer. If you're trading for Patrick Kane, you're banking on your ability to convince him that this is a place he would want to be going forward. It's a year-long sales pitch.

I'm not even advocating for them to make this move. I'm just saying it's not the worst idea on the planet.

That may very well be the case, but Shesterkin has been Hart-worthy this year. The Sabres ran out of that kind of goodwill with the hockey gods after Hasek.

Is that enough to convince his to ride into the sunset in his hometown? I have no idea, but again, assuming the price is reasonable, it could be worth a shot. I would do that in a second, but a lot of that is because I really have no use for Mittelstadt anymore. I think it would depend on what the rest of the league actually thinks of him at this point.

It might be more than 2 or 3. It still doesn't get them anywhere near a playoff spot all else equal. Covid and injuries play a part in that, but just about every team had issues with that this year. Teams with depth survived. The Sabres didn't have it.
