And your solution to this is to acquire another career backup that's never proven capable of being a full time starter? Not only would that be a lateral to what the Leafs have today, you'd be parting way with assets at other positions to do it.
Also - none of the D that I listed were protected by their goalies. On the flipside, Binnington is barely even NHL calibar without Pietrangelo playing 25-30min a night. - BlackSwan
I completely disagree with your opinion man I’m sorry.
Campbell was drafted like 12 years ago and has about 35 good games to show. He is a flake mentally. Maybe the nicest guy in hockey - but a complete flake. Those other goalies have shown so much more promise in less than half the career time. You would need to give up an asset to get a goalie, yes. No GM would just have one over.
None of the goalies were protected by that d either was my point. I was being sarcastic to your previous point. Neither the d nor tenders were the only reason the other were good. Not sure where you played puck but it’s a team game.
Just having that stud dman is not the secret recipe for Championship’s…Bruins never one a Cuo each year cause they had the greatest defenceman to ever play. This notion that a marginal d core but with ‘stud’ is the answer is terrible. 20-23mins a night - the other 3 pairings need to play too.
Rielly is 100 good enough to have slotted in as your ‘best’ d man with a solid pairings with him. I’d argue Carlson for sure and even Letang are not head and shoulders above him.
Anyways - you imagine your team with say: one Hedman calibre and 5 Holls and see a Cup. I’d say it’ll take a deeper d core than one super star. |

Goaltending duel in Alberta last night.
My gawd the oilers tenders were so bad. If they had quality tending they do something this year.
But they dont.
2nd round is as far as they go.

Think you've reached the point where you're not cut out to be a Leaf fan. Don't know how else to say it.

Why?
Cause he needs to except and package constant failure with pretty little bows like some do?
Its ok to vent, happens for about a week or so after another first round loss.
Heck, all last summer some wanted to trade Marner.
Cooler heads will prevail....maybe.

Campbell is no worse than Murray, Niemi and Crawford.
Rielly is a (frank)in long way off of Hedman.
More than one team has proven they can win without Vezina level goaltending, but every one of those teams has proven you need reliability on the blueline. That's the difference for me.
I can't really agree with the notion that Letang is light years ahead of Rielly though. |

I don’t think there’s anybody in here who’s not looking for the Leafs to improve next year. So, let’s talk about that. But just mocking anything doesn’t doesn’t involve blowing up the core as being nothing more than “running it back” is getting old. |

I would argue that goalies are voodoo for the most part, and outside of handful of perennial top-tier goalies (Price, Vaseline, etc.) that are "sure things", the rest are a crapshoot, particularly in the playoffs, when a goalie can catch fire during a series and upset a contender.
Rielly is definitely a step below your prototypical "stud" D, mainly because of his size and play in his own end, but he's not a mile below those guys either. |

Tell me how you are going to improve this team without trading a big piece? There isn't cap space. To top it off it looks like Campbell is gone. They are going to shuffle bottom six players. Same old same old. |

I think you're right. Goaltending is hard to predict and until we have a Vasilevskiy type we'll have to hope for the best. With that said, I don't think Campbell was the reason the Leafs lost to Tampa.. I thought Campbell was good, with the exception of game 4(but that was team letdown, not just him)...

Alright, I'll bite.
Goaltending is going to be Dubas' toughest job. If Mrazek can return to form, he'll be a solid 1B, assuming Campbell resigns to a cap-friendly deal, which I think will get done. But two groin injuries is kind of scary, and I'd rather just move him and let Krallgren take the backup role.
Next up, Kerfoot needs to go. I'll take a top 9 winger with size, maybe a bit less upside offensively, but less than 3.5M. Long shots: Kase (Nylander playing the left side), Robertson, Joey Anderson. Likely: a trade.
Need some Marlies grads; we need cheap contracts on this team. Steeves, Robertson, Anderson, maybe Curtis Douglas, but likely he's not ready, but who knows. 6'9" guy with hands and not afraid to drop the gloves? Yes please. |

Can you (and everyone else for that matter) please drop the backhanded / passive aggressive insults towards opinions other than the one you have. All that crap does it instigate the arguments which digress to name calling etc. I'd prefer not to have a summer of that.
Have a different opinion, and voice it provided it's done politely and maturely - resorting to backhanded insults and name calling (not saying you did that here but I'm saying that's where this stuff goes to far too often) is not that.
I just read an excellent exchange between 2 posters about the value of a stud D man vs a stud goalie etc. Use that as an example - no name calling or insults just a good old honest debate. It was refreshing to see.
Thx |

Improvements don't have to be expensive.
TBL's bottom 6 was cheaper and better than ours, and the core you so desperately want to nuke, out-played or at least was a match for TBL's.
Thankfully, most of our flexibility is in our bottom 6, contract-wise, with a number of expiring or easy-to-bury contracts down there.
