I think MSL has a lot to learn at being a coach at the NHL level.

His early change of strategy/approach and getting the team in a positive frame of mind had a huge impact. Near the end of the season, with player having been traded and the overall feeling of a lost season, the team sagged again.

We saw him getting out-coached often, not being able to adapt strategies in-game a few times so I think he heeds to hire a veteran assistant coach to his staff... a Larry Robinson-like coach, who has been there and done it all.

I think it was already mentioned they wouldn't be adding to the coaching staff, which I find very surprising as I agree with you that some experience behind the bench would be quite helpful.

yup, but it's probably normal for the group to have lost the initial motivation they had with the coaching change, everyone knew the team still wasn't going nowhere, and they just wanted that miserable season to end. I think a fresh start next year could do wonders, even if the expectations can't be set too high...

last season they were out by Halloween.
next year they'll be out by xmas.

I agree.

The good news is, he has time to learn and despite his shortcomings, his approach towards young players seems to be paying off.

Might be wrong, but that was just Saint-Louis opinion that they did not need to add there or something along the lines that he liked the people who he was working with.

if Torts can't find a job this summer as headcoach, he'll join MSL as his assitant

Fido.

Edmonton.

Didn’t care for Gretzky, so cheered for the flames always against them.

I gave myself the rest of the week off (for being really productive) at the lake now, and everyone’s an Oil fan, including my son.

Got some best buds that are Calgary fans, but that Tkachuk kid is a little (frank)er.

Kinda hope Kassian knocks his block off..

A little (frank)er I would give a poop ton to have on our team !!

Not sure I would want him near this team. He throws his own players under the bus all the time. Saint-Louis does the opposite.

I may be foolish, but I thought we would have news on Martin St-Louis' contract extension by now...this is taking some time.

Also, what's going on with Carey Price? He has surely seen that second specialist by now.

- stinger67

i'm surprised people didnt accept yet this will be a cluster(frank) still...a long dragging cluster(frank)…

If you are gonna have a cluster(frank), better to have it now than 2-3 years down the line when this team will be aiming to make the playoffs.

well usually when a new head coach comes in they let him pick his staff, or at least he would have a strong say on it, I doubt management would just "impose" someone on him... anyway a lot can still change till the start of the season.

Still. not 100% convinced MSL intended to coach more than the close of last year before moving into management.

Not sure there is any alternative at this moment thought.

But we will see what happens.

wasn't it confirmed pretty early on that this wasn't the case, that he wasn't there just be a temporary substitute?

I think a lot of things were said, to cover up they did not have any answers or did not want to cause a firestorm in the press - for how bad the team was, a replacement, and building their management team - so something might have been said, but I am still not convinced MSL wanted to be coach beyond the end of the season.

Maybe things have changed, but I find the lack fo a contract points more towards that, than anything, at this point.
