I have a feeling the organization is going to continue down the self destructive path of chasing players through free agency to try and win now. This has been Dave Scott’s M.O. since his dismissal of Hextall.
Now, I’m not opposed to signing Johnny Gaudreau because the team has two top six centers in Couturier and Hayes and he’d be a great addition to the top six, however, the second six needs work and they’ve gotta hit on this 5th overall pick.
Quite frankly, I don’t know what to expect next season as the last several years have been such a gong show. |

Bill, what’s your take on Paul Maurice as a coach in general, and then specifically on how good of a fit he could be (or not be) for the Flyers? |

They cannot afford Gaudreau even at his current salary. More importantly, they cannot afford another contract where they will be pay millions upon millions to someone into their mid-thirties (see Couturier, Hayes, Ellis, Atkinson) |

I was wondering if trading Atkinson for the rights to Gaudreau could make it happen. Stupid dream, I know. |

How has this been Scott's M.O? Last 2 big FA signings were JVR(Hextall) and Hayes(Fletcher)
We currently dont have the cap room to make such an addition unless Atkinson, Couturier, Hayes, Provorov or JVR are moved.
Fletcher should be on the phone with McPhee and try to pry Marchessault or Theadore from him for Cap space. That's the type of move we have the cap to make |

He is a good coach; thorough, well-prepared, good in-game adjustments and usually gets the right players out in the right situations. He is no miracle worker, though. |

If they want him they can pretty easily make some room. JVR in his final year won’t be hard to deal. A team like Arizona would take him and happily flip him at the deadline.
I don’t think Gaudreau is the answer but cap space isn’t going to be an end all be all roadblock. |

Arizona would want a quality asset along with him.

I don’t see any way we get rid of JVR unless it’s quality assets like you said or another bad contract coming back. There’s also not much reason, team isn’t going anywhere. Maybe there will be a market for him come trade deadline. |

According to Marek, the Flyers will interview Trotz this coming week. He added, however, that the Flyers will operate on their own timeline to make a hiring decision and they are willing to wait even if it means that potential short-list candidates end up getting hired elsewhere before Philly comes to a final decision.
This makes absolutely no sense. In other words, they will operate on their own timeline even if it means hurting themselves by losing out on who they really want.
Its sounds like paralysis by analysis.
How can they come to a final decision if the guy they decide they want is no longer there?
Maddening.

I agree. JVR is going nowhere unless another asset goes with him or salary comes back or both. They can move him but it wont free up as much as we think it will.
This team is in the worst possible position. In cap hell like a team that is in win now mode, but nowhere near win now mode.

And the worst part is we are in such a good position to tank for a few years and get some really good picks but management is going to do their best to finish 20th overall and be “in the race” down the stretch. |

They should literally do nothing. Let all the younger players compete for roster spots.
Edit: Other than moves to shed cap space without giving up future assets. |

Giroux went from one gutless team to another.
Taken off the first unit PP, and ice time being taken away. He must feel about 2 inches tall.
Systematically dismantled. |

every team has a contract they want to ship to Arizona. It will not be easy as they will have their pick of who if any to take.

And re-sign Zac M
Would that be considered a form of "tanking" Cliff?

He got to pick his destination. He would only go one place. It limited what type of return the Flyers could get.
How's it working out for him? |
