If they get knocked out they'll trade for Miller in the off season. Schneider something and a 1st. Both sides will win. Van long term Rangers short term for a cup run or three

“Minimizing risk, and the Braden Schneider thing

Any trade has risk involved, and for the Canucks, it’s all about minimizing that risk by increasing both the quality and the quantity of the future assets they’re getting in return.

Which is why it’s not hard to understand why the club seemed dead set on acquiring Braden Schneider in any deal involving Miller.

Schneider is a big right-shot defenceman with serious top-4 potential. Right now, he’s playing on the Rangers’ third pairing, and is showing all the signs of a player who could one day play with Quinn Hughes both now and down the line as well.

The only issue is, those are also the exact reasons the Rangers are likely to continue to refuse to offer him up in any trade, regardless of what the return is.

Although the Rangers don’t seem keen on moving Schneider at the current moment, it is worth noting that they have two very solid defencemen in Adam Fox and Jacob Trouba on the right side who presumably will keep Schneider out of the top 4 for the foreseeable future.

We’re not saying the Rangers will look at this situation and change their minds for sure, but there’s definitely a possibility that they’re more willing to move Schneider after getting a chance to evaluate their team during their current playoff run.”

Re: Scott Walker

In seeking to address some of his organization’s concerns about how the club went about winning games during his first partial season in Vancouver, Boudreau will also be adjusting to life with a new staff. This past weekend the club announced that assistant coaches Scott Walker and Kyle Gustafsson, in addition to video coach Darryl Seward would not return to the club.

The loss of Walker looms largest here. The versatile ex-Canucks draft pick departed on his own terms and wasn’t dismissed. He has served the Canucks organization in multiple roles over the years and carries a ton of weight internally as a result of his close personal relationship with people at a variety of different levels within the organization; from Rutherford to director of player development Ryan Johnson, to director of amateur scouting Todd Harvey.

Moreover, Walker was handpicked by Boudreau to join the club’s staff when Boudreau was initially hired in December and was the closest thing Boudreau had to “his guy” on the Vancouver coaching staff. Clearly, the loss of Walker stings and Boudreau admitted to being disappointed even as he understood Walker’s view of the matter on Tuesday.

“The whole plan when I asked Scott in the first place was that he was going to do it for the year, and his commitment was for the year,” Boudreau said. “I thought he did a great job, but he has an awful lot of commitments at home and is a big family man. He still owns part of the Guelph Storm and is a big part of it. So I totally understood when he said he didn’t think he could come back. I knew it from the start. I was sitting there and you can hope, but I knew what the answer was going to be. So I’m a little disappointed, but we knew it from the start that his commitment was just for this year.”

More from Scott Walker

But while the majority of the 20-minute interview was waxing poetic about Boudreau and the team around him, when the subject of analytics was approached, Walker went in a different direction. Despite having worked in various player development roles for the Canucks from 2015 until 2019, when he left to join the Arizona Coyotes’ front office as a special assistant to then-GM John Chayka, Walker was dismissive about the importance of understanding advanced hockey stats.

“I was totally against analytics in hockey. I mean, show me an analytical team that’s won the Stanley Cup,” Walker said. “People would say our analytics weren’t great when we were in Vancouver, but we were winning games.”

“You’re nine games over .500, you end 12 games over .500? That’s the only analytics I care about in life.”

Miller can go if you can get Schneider, Chytil, 1st, 2nd.

The current situation with the Battle of Alberta got me thinking that now's the time to do a rundown of how all the ex-Canucks are faring/have fared in the playoffs so far. If the Flames get eliminated, Zack Kassian could be the last man standing, unless Tyler Motte has something to say about it.

Elliotte: I think the Miller extension is going to be a tough thing to do.

Trade Miller

- Pacificgem

Still torn on this. Miller is such a beast & yet he could fetch a haul. On the former 5/8.25m on the latter is the hard part. Who for what? Will the offseason create a bidding war?

Problems in the room? Sounds like Kane wasn’t as bad as made out to be. Buff & other older vets could’ve been it.

On a Miller trade…

——————————————————

“A league exec weighs in

We used a phone-a-friend to help us out a bit here.

“Getting a potential top pairing defenceman is the key to getting a fair return,” one anonymous league executive — not affiliated with the Canucks — told CanucksArmy. “A mid-round first could be a bust, and Chytil is an okay piece, but not great. Schneider, Chytil and a 1st is probably what’s necessary and I think adding a second-round pick is required. Miller is one of the top players in the game. It has to be a haul, and even if it is, the Canucks still may lose the trade.””

- Pacificgem

This is exactly what I’ve been saying & thinking. This 1st round pick isn’t what many think imo it’s the 3rd piece in the package.

My 2 bits on this is 1st I agree on NYR position. 2nd they’ve Strome to resign & he’s getting a raise. 3rd is NYR cap space is not easy for them. So to fit in Miller is easily an upgrade on Strome & cheap for 1 year. NYR fans harp on his next contract but that’s 1 year away & time for cap gymnastics. So boils down to they look very good NOW but are they good enough to win the CUP? Iffy imo. So they a stable of many top prospects still leftover if they get Miller. Do they push hard & try to go over the top?

This must be one example of the ask.
