Gosh remember when Tavares took that hometown discount to join his childhood team? The more players that do this, the worse JT's deal looks. Gio doesn't even have an NMC. - Bartacus

Vasilevskiy man!
As good as their d core is and having Hedman they still have up an above avg shot against each game - That beast of a money wins every time man.
That old adage - show me a good team or coach amd I’ll show you a great goaltender.
Always hated tenders but they are the most important position in the game |

The refs in this Colorado / St. Louis game are really letting Perron dig his own grave. They should just throw a 10 minute misconduct at him before he does something really, really stupid. |

Watching this Colorado game, kadri is exactly what the leafs are missing for playoffs.
It’s amazing how leaf players get suspended and crucified during playoffs when they are a generally clean team, only to go unnoticed in other markets. |

Lot of dudes to sign though:
UFAs:
1 x 3rd liner (Mickey)
2 x 4th liners (Blackwell, Spezza)
1 x starting goaltender
1 x 1st pairing D (Laboosh)
RFAs:
2 x 3rd/4th liners (Engvall, Kase)
2 x 4/5/6 defensemen (Lillybust, Sandin)
So like 5 forwards, 3 D, and a starting goalie for 7M. - gravyface
If possible, trading Mrazek and Holl clears up $5.8M. Looks a bit better that way. Even more-so if Muzzin ends up gone, too. |

Well...the Leafs were missing Kadri in the playoffs when he was playing for them. |

So was Colorado last season.
And if Perron is continued to be allowed to run around, he might be out again this playoffs, but for a different reason. |

I think trading Muzzin just leaves too many holes and uncertainty.
Also, a few guys get bumped to the minors like Kallgren so it's legit 8 million before Mrazek or Holl are moved. If they move then it's 12.8 (have to have Kallgren or another back up there)

Right. Brad Marchand is from Halifax, not Boston. Put up better numbers than Tavares his signing year on a competitive team and signed a deal 'in his prime' at a different value. You're right though, this troll can't count. |

Might cost us an asset to move Mrazek.
Possibly the same asset we get for Holl.
If we eat 25% of Mrazek, we could actually get an asset instead of giving one up....

All I was saying was that people who want to play for a specific team, even in their prime, have been known to take meaningful discounts as UFAs that let GMs build a contender around them. Brad Marchand isn't even from Boston, put up better numbers than Tavares when he signed his deal, settled on a different number. The JT signing set a precedent for other contracts which necessitates the Gio/Spezza deals, but thankfully the Leafs are fortunate to have a ton of homegrown players. This is a fantastic signing. |

Marchand is a winger, JT is a centre.
It was reported that Tavares turned down more money from both NYI and San Jose.
At the time, it was the biggest UFA signing in history, probably still is.
We all knew the deal wouldn’t age well, but Toronto went years without centre depth. Now they have it.
Tavares was still almost a ppg this year, there are far worse contracts out there. |

First, I think the Leafs are really close. But knowing what they are missing is really important.
Second, Florida offers a clear insight into where the Leafs may have come from. Florida won the President's Trophy and a first playoff round by playing great offensive hockey. Panthers have huge regular season offensive talent and won by simply outscoring everyone. On multiple occasions they fell behind on the regular season scoreboard and were able to come back because of their elite offensive power.
Third, Tampa shows us what a team needs to be if they want to win it all.
In today's NHL, teams that can win a Stanley Cup need good goaltending and a strong defensive game in their own end. They also need for every forward to offer up a 200' presence on every shift.
Leafs need to be careful in their thinking. Cannot simplify the challenge as being only one win away from going all the way.
Does anyone else wonder why Seattle and Calgary opened the door allowing Giordano to walk? Be careful when an opportunity appears to good to be true.

This is all true.
It is also true that it was a colossal mistake.
You don't need an 11M 2C. The Leafs had Matthews and Kadri.
It has prevented the Leafs from building using the gold standard template: 1G, 1D, 1C.
4 forwards @ 40M? Can't get us out of round one five years straight. Now that we're at the "contract won't age well" stage - it's going to be even harder. |

I think it is actually a really good and tough question. The Leafs are closer to being a Stanley Cup contender than some of the other pretenders.
For example, Many Leaf fans are easily convinced that round 1 could have been won if Kadri and Hyman were still on the Leaf line up cards. I understand there are financial constraints. But, as Tampa has demonstrated, winning requires some sandpaper in your lineup in order to finish the job. |

Oh FFS, they don't draw Tampa they are out of round one this year, but Tampa in round two means the end. And round two also is not good enough. |
