You say you have to draft higher to get a better player. Better tell Tampa Bay that after getting Brayden Point in the 3rd round or Kucherov in the 2nd round.
Who was talking about Benning? I didn't mention him.
What's more incredible is you once claimed to be "above average intelligence" but yet you having to be helped a lot. - manvanfan
Over a ten year period almost every team hits occasionally on players in later rounds, even the Canucks, might not be a Hart Trophy winner though. The Canucks got Schneider, Bieksa, Edler and Hansen in later rounds or late first for Schneider and they played important roles to their tremendous success.
Tampa does seemingly get consistently great value in later rounds, more so than most other teams???
I wasn't talking Benning vs Gillis, I'm talking whoever the Rangers GM's were during the Gillis era.
Out of those Rangers players, there is 2-3rd round picks, 4th round pick, 28oa, a 6th round pick, another late 2nd.
You always talk about needing to be better in later rounds. That's what I'm talking about. If you don't hit on the late first or any other round how do you create any currency. You are always buying and trading.

The Rangers had all sorts of currency from drafting well. Makes the rebuild a lot easier when you have currency. - manvanfan
At the end of the day you’re absolutely 100% correct, you gotta hit on picks from round two on even if you pick later in the rounds. At least occasionally. That said, for every player that turns out good from 15 - 32 in any round there’s seventeen kids who aren’t very good. It’s such a crapshoot.
No excuses though, you’ve gotta be better than the rest of the franchise’s scouting teams. Not an easy task. - LeftCoaster
5th pick isn't always that easy either.
Being the best will go round and round in a competitive 32 team league. Unfortunately, Gillis was the worst for 6 years. The players from a lot of those drafts are now helping teams win Stanley cups.
What I always loved about Tampa was no matter where they picked, they always had currency. Drouin didn't work out so traded him. Brett Connelly traded for 2-2nd round picks to Boston. Slater Koekkok 10oa wasn't working out traded for Jan Ruuta.
Drafted Vasi and when he was ready traded Bishop and got Cernak.
Benning was (frank)en brutal with what he did with his "currency" but at least he had some.

I sort of wrote a response in my post to this already but yes thanks to getting some players in later rounds the Canucks were able to then acquire Horvat, a 2nd for Bieska. Would have been nice to get something for Edler. Rathbone for Hansen.
TB hit big a couple of times. Mostly living off that now. Dallas looks to be the late round winner last the couple seasons. Shouldn't say just Dallas because don't know quite yet but they have some strong prospects picked past the 1st round.

ya I was definetly on the sell Marky team, sell elder and Tanev teams. Either sign them or get value, simple!

Notice all the Canadian teams suck at this, biggest market team got it.

NHL Scouting Combine: A popular question by some NHL clubs looking to catch a prospect off guard during the interviews is what animal would best describe him as a hockey player. Most say 'lion.' Juraj Slafkovsky today told me he responded 'Wolf'.
Byron Bader
This question assumes you have a great understanding of the animal kingdom and how each would relate to a hockey situation. Then you have to pick the right one and articulate into words! I, for one, know very little about animals and would not feel qualified to answer this.
Wife just said that she does ask what type of animal to some of her clients. Legit question to ask to get to know someone. She said a Wolf answer for hockey would be a perfect answer and figures that Slafkosky might have been coached into that one or he's really smart.
She also said anybody that said "lion" means that they are lazy and the women do most of the hard work for them.

Picture this: You're a Florida Panthers fan. Your team traded three first-round picks to go all-in for the Stanley Cup. You score only 3 goals in a sweep by your state rival. You then watch Frank Vatrano torch that same team in the Eastern Conference Final.

Elliotte suggested FLA might be a team interested in JTM.
