That's still a $2.8M cap hit for two years. The better choices IMO are

1) Ask him if he wants an all expenses paid trip to Robidas Island
2) Trade his ass, include a prospect or two that will never play for the Leafs and a pick if you have to.

Yeah...honestly the Bruins were on fire for a lot of the season. I remember it was all the Leafs could do to stay ahead of them. It is pretty harsh.

If there’s a trade that doesn’t hurt too much great. Otherwise, if you want to go for it in the next two years the buyout is your move. It gives you big immediate savings ($2.8 and $3M) and hopefully the cap has gone up or you’ve won a Cup in years 3 and 4 when you’re looking at a $1.4M hit.
