crazy
having the best player(s) in the League doesnt mean a thing in the NHL anymore.
Mcdavid can only play 1/3 of the game - senstroll
Without a good goalie and decent D....a player or two can only do so much
But wow, what a playoff performance by McD and Drysaddle, the oilers star players really stepped it up.
Oh and they lost in the 3rd round to the best team in the league....not really meaningless at all.
Leafs fans would throw two parades enroute to the 3rd round. |

I don't mean to rub it in.
But the Oilers made it to the third round mostly because they did take that big step up in their game.
The Leafs are, overall, a better team than the Oilers, I'm convinced of this.
But we have yet to see their own star player "take over" like what we've seen from McDavid and Drai in these playoffs.
It needs to happen.

Ok that's fair but you can't say that without factoring in when the Oilers star players were able to "take over" and when they were not.
They took over games vs LA, less vs Calagary and none when they faced the Avs, one of if not the best team in the league (sorry Panthers). The Leafs played Tampa the 2 time defending champs - big difference between them and the LA Kings. |

I think I'd watch 5 minutes of golf for 20 bucks. And then I would just go inside my mind and meditate while pointing my eyes at the tv but not really watching. Or I guess I could marvel at all the wasted resources that go into golf course architecture.

Oh of course, Tampa was a stronger matchup than LA. And as Fake mentioned, Matthews and Marner played much better this year than last year vs Montreal.
Calgary kinda imploded but they remain a good team and McDavid and Draisatl kept scoring at a ridiculous pace against them.
Even vs Colorado, how many points did they get despite not winning a game? A quick research gave me this:
McDavid had 7 in 4.
Draisatl had 6 in 4.
Sure they didn't face Vasilevsky or Carey Price in net but they still found a way to contribute significantly and give their team a chance to win.
So yeah, maybe it's most about opposition, but even as a hockey fan not cheering for Toronto specifically, you kinda wish you'd see Matthews have the same kind of performance in a playoffs series.
It's not a knock on him at all, just so we're clear.

Frequently asked questions you too man!
Oh and Habs hired Marie-Philip Poulin as a special consultant.
Or to play in the top 6, I'm not sure.

I wouldn't say it's meaningless. They lost in the 3rd rnd to one of the best teams in the league. - fifty__missions
ok fine, you can get by a little with a Mcdavid.
But what a tough slog if the rest of the team is not filled out to help.

Interesting take.
If you were about to begin playoffs, who would you want as your first selection? Best goalie (Vasilevski or Shesterkin). Best Dman (Fox, Hedman or Makar). Best forward (McDavid, MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Matthews, Zibanejad, or Kucherov).
For me, probably Makar. - spatso
Best goalie...not a hard choice - Shesterkin

The Oil just had no answer for that depth and Makar...
plus the Oil got Mike Smith'd... some crazy saves... but on so many occasions complete boneheaded plays..and soft soft goals.

Habs miss the playoffs again next year. Maybe Pittsburgh misses as well, then they can claim Chapter 11 and by some totally legit miracle win the draft lottery.
