Why did VGK make this trade?

For LTI teams, trading a healthy player for an LTIR contract is money in/money out, where the team effectively creates cap space equal to the amount of the healthy player, VGK made $5M in cap space

Past example: TBL/CHI Johnson for Seabrook

To clear up a common misconception:

A team does NOT need to be below the upper limit to start the season on LTIR.

They can use the LTIR training-camp equation on the day prior to season start and place players on LTIR while already above the limit.

Sabres probably get something in the 25m ballpark from revenue sharing. Little tough to guess with the pandemic + expansion factoring in. They were 31st in attendance. Would bet they report losses last season. How much of that is real vs accounting games is a tougher question.

Forgot to add, Weber's actual dollars owed each of his remaining 4 seasons is very low ($3M-$1M-$1M-$1M).

Vegas is actually buying low on cap space.

Considering the reversed deadline day deal had Vegas adding a 2nd round pick to get rid of Dadonov's contract, this feels like a better deal for Vegas.

Could be. Have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Dadanov is a decent player with 1 year left, but 6.5m of cash, where Weber is a 4 year headache. It's a great deal from Montreal's side and easy to see why KA wouldn't be allowed to discuss it.

Opinions vary. But McAvoy IS one of the best, Power could be. It's a trade I'd personally make, full well knowing Power's potential.
