You're operating under the assumption that this is something other than a financial decision. 4 days ago they traded for the walking corpse of Ben Bishop to hit the cap floor. They deserve zero benefit of the doubt - Hank Balling

I wouldn't say it apparent yet. We still don't know about the kids. Olof is a solid 50+ pt guy with a wicked shot. The only other guy with that kinda shot is Tage(on our team)
If you can get a top 4 RD i can't say no but its gotta be the right one - DirtyDan
By no means am I saying he isn't useful. As Chad laid out, he's becoming a nice complimentary 5v5 piece. But Chad's sources, Friedman and Servalli have all questioned whether he'll remain here.
Use him to get a better forward or an RHD. Use picks if necessary. Just be better.

we'll see about that. All contextual, right? What's Thompson worth? Is he "big money"? Dahlin? Power?
I know I'm in the minority but you don't pass on Alex DeBrincat because he costs money. Sorry. I guarantee Kevo would be thrilled to take him. He's in high demand I'm sure so who knows what that cost is. Hopefully not sky high because he's a UFA after one season. One would think the team taking him would have an extension ready. - TheSabresTaco
Very good post taco, although we might be a year away from spending on a guy like the cat.
The bishop signing is discouraging to some degree, cant see adding an expensive guy via trade/sign or ufa for too much.
Tage is going to be an interesting contract.
Does he get extended this fall?
How much?
Dahlin is gonna be 10 million IMO. Signed next offseason with 1 year left on the current deal.

thanks for stopping by. Sardarian is a long term prospect, at least 3 years out. Weissbach had a strong rookie season in Rochester after four years at Wisconsin. He should get NHL looks next season and fight for a spot in 23-24.
Here's Scott Wheeler's ranking of our pool. If you don't have Athletic I'll break it down. Interested in having this conversation for both DeBrincat and Murphy.

Thanks for the link. My thoughts on a Debrincat and Murphy trade to the Sabres.
I think a lot of Hawk fans look at the return for Hagel (2023 and 2024 1sts and 2 decent young players in Raddysh and Katchouk) and think the return for Debrincat should be higher since he a proven 40 goal scorer. Unless TB falls off the cliff the next 2 seasons, those picks will be near the bottom of the round. And Hagel is cost controlled for 2 more years at 1.5M, then a RFA who could probably be signed for 3 x 3M, so the Lightning got a cheap, decent player for probably the next 5 years for that package.
Debrincat will cost you at least 9M a year, but that's going to be the cost for 40 goal scorers. So what would be a fair cost for him? Probably the discussion starts with the Buffalo 9th pick in 2022, a 2023 1st (top 5 protected - although I think your team with some off season improvements will be a playoff contender), and two of your top prospects. I won't be greedy and ask for Power, Krebs, or Quinn. Maybe Peterka and Rosen? Maybe also include a 2023 2nd and the Hawks can throw in a 2023 4th?
Hawks get a low 1st round this year, probably a mid-round 1st in 2023, and 2 very good prospects. That's a better return than the Hagel return of 2 late round 1st and 2 decent prospects, but Debrincat will score 40 goals a season for you for most of the rest of the decade.
The Murphy part of the trade could be Weissman and a 2023 2nd or 3rd. Again the Hawks can add another lower round 2023 pick. Rather not have Russian Sardarian. I don't have a dislike for Russians because of what's happening in the Ukraine. Just think since they have the chance to play in the KHL they can stay there and may not sign here, or always go back to the Motherland upon expiration of their ELC. |

Perhaps. I don't see it like that. You can logically deduce (I've posted it here the other day) why that was done. They won't operate like this forever.
If Olofsson is traded you've got 10 million left to cover that hole, and that's with promotions and RFA signings. Do you get a F in return? What do you pay another goalie? What's the RHD worth? The rest of the roster is long term and still mostly inexpensive.
I even voiced my displeasure about the fact we needed to do Bishop and how we get virtually nothing in return. But I get it, and it makes sense. I just hate that we need to do it. |

I've liked Murphy for a while here. While you're here, could you toss us a proposal for cat and murphy? Would love to see some Hawks perspective. - TheSabresTaco
Kind of tough to say on Cat. He warrants a huge return on talent, but he's going to need a new contract that takes a lot of space which will scare some competition away.
I would look at the return for Hagel (two first and two prospects) as the framework, but Davidson is going to be looking for better firsts than are expected from Tampa. This seems to be the prevailing wisdom, although I admit it may not line up with reality.
Murphy I outlined before - a 2nd and a middle prospect. |

As they should. But let's try to put this into context before everyone jumps off the (frank)ing bridge.
If Olofsson is not seen as a long term piece, he should be traded, and if they can't get what they want, sign him to a short term deal. It's becoming clear he's not a part of this team long term. So go get someone who will be. - TheSabresTaco
Another solid post, players are not bigger than the franchise.
I like olo, but injuries , small size (plays small) and inconsistencies are not the long term / big contract type guy at this juncture.
3 , 4 or 5 years at 5 -5.5 million would be comfortable
Or
Trade him for a rd defenseman |

I'm not sure about how "apparent" olo doesnt have a long term spot.
Why move your 3rd or 4th top goal scorer, assists guy and points guy?
Clearly to early to be that decisive. We're gonna see by October |

Thanks for your input and effort, greatly appreciated. I'll knock the easy one off first. I'm certain the Hawks would rather take Weissbach, he's much more NHL ready. Sardarian is several years out but he's totally committed to playing at UNH next season after playing in the USHL this year. I'd certainly shake on Weissbach and a 2 for Murphy, but that's just me.
Debrincat, I liken him to maybe a blend of Jeff Skinner and Sam Reinhart. Like you mentioned, Hagel carried a heavy price tag because of his utility ability and very low cost/age. Those late 1sts are alright and those prospects should be fighting for bottom 6 minutes.
Skinner received a 2nd, 3rd, 6th and a garbage prospect. Reinhart received a perceived late 1st and a former 7th round pick with higher than anticipated development. Skinner was facing a year from UFA, same with Reinhart. Now, we know DeBrincat is a stronger player than those two. His contract demands and UFA status will work against his worth in a trade.
I would counter with VGK 2022 1st, Buffalo 2022 2nd, Rosen and Laaksonen. I could be convinced of using Buffalo 2022 1st instead.

Appreciate you stopping bye and the excellent post.
As a Sabres fan your asking for :
9th OA
2023 1ST protected
Our 14oa (rosen) for last season
Peterka (2nd) ,but valued at a 1st IMO
swap a 2nd for a 4th.
So (4) 1st rounders and a 2nd (kinda)
We just got tuch, krebs, 16oa and a 2nd for eichel. (Injured)
The cat IMO , isnt a eichels value.
Maybe 3 out of the 5 pieces requested, saving peterka and rosen.
My counter:
9OA, 1st next year and a straight 2nd rounder. |

At the end of 23-24? It's definitely a possibility. Lot of time between now and then to see how he furthers his development.
I won't tell you he'll be better than Makar.
