Matthews was sort of a worthy Hart winner, but the most valuable player and difference maker for his team was clearly Shesty - IMHO of course.

I think he meant that the ump wanted to say he didn't hit it and called him out on strikes.

The NHL's description of what the Hart trophy is for and what those voting on it differ (I think) - mostly because the NHL description sounds like every team should have a Hart Trophy winner.

This is the league's description:

The Hart Memorial Trophy is an annual award given to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season.

It really mean they are judging (or supposed to be) which of the top player from the 32 teams was the most valuable to that team - which is silly and very well could end up with a lesser talented player winning (especially if they are on a poop team). I believe writers just vote on who is the best in the league / league MVP for the Hart.

It's really ends up a bit like 2 of the same award & that's why players have won both such as Crosby, Gretzky & Mc David all come to mind.....and the fact Matthews is in the discussion with those guys and he is a Leaf is just amazing.

I agree they need to change description.

In my opinion the only trophy’s that matter are statistically won or the Terrible Ted trophy - that is awarded by actual professional hockey players opinions who play in the league and not a bunch of goofs who never played better puck than AA as kids at most.

Matthews was voted the best in the league last season by pro players. I trust their humble opinions.

Here's a question. Does it matter what they played? Can they not be knowledgeable anyway?

Yes, yes it does matter. Unless it’s all just for laughs then no.
But just cause you enjoy something, doesn’t mean you understand it.
Every player who wins the Teddy trophy states how important that specific award is to them cause it’s voted on by peers. Actual players and not people who took a 2 year course on journalism and like to watch a game on the tv.

Anyways man that’s just my take. Not worth debating to be honest.

That's a solid take., and you stated it perfectly. Not sure who'd want to debate it? Ignorant fools, perhaps?

Only 15 have won both in the same year and it’s a pretty distinguished list:

LaFleur, Gretz, Mario, Messier, Hull, Federov, Lindros, Hasek, Jagr, Sakic, Syd, Ovi, McDavid and now Matthews

There is no need (nor tolerance) for name calling. You've been warned.

Thank you, for the warning. I'm uncertain that my comment warranted it, but I'll accept it all the same. Just so we're on the same page, how would you describe someone who would argue with facts?

How about you just stick with saying you agree and not have to comment on the other persons opinion entirely and move on. It’s probably your best move at this point.

Agree, but, isn't that what this forum is for? I mean we're all just commenting on other people's opinions. I'm also certain I posed a question, I never called anyone in particular a name, just asked what one should be called.
I bid you farewell, O wielder of the misdirected ban hammer.
Oh, and I'll decide what my best move should be, not some power hungry Muppet.

Ban away, guy.

Very distinguished indeed!

They journalists only guessed right 15 times.

That list is phenomenal though. It’s crazy that Hasek won as a tender. That’s a heck of a season eh!

No worries man. I just think that some people have vast knowledges of hockey. Even if they never played it. Look at Pat Burns for example.

I don’t dismiss the voting of the hockey writers as opposed to the players (ignorant fool that I am). They watch all the games, they tend to be more detached and sometimes more analytical and aren’t coloured by wanting teammates or buddies to win. Some of the results of the players’ polls are pretty bizarre.

All of player and hockey writers and other methods of choosing trophy winners have value. That’s what makes winning Hart and Lindsey special
