I don’t dismiss the voting of the hockey writers as opposed to the players (ignorant fool that I am). They watch all the games, they tend to be more detached and sometimes more analytical and aren’t coloured by wanting teammates or buddies to win. Some of the results of the players’ polls are pretty bizarre.

Marner lead the NHL in points after New Year's, while also killing penalties. The players voted on Matthews as the best player for the Teddy. He's also been on one of the greatest goal-scoring runs in the modern era while playing a 200 foot game. They are no-brainers for their respective honours in my view, and the NHL writers and players.
