Neither of them play a “tough” game - I’d keep Marner over Willy - way more upside. Marner is a Penalty killer, playmaker and this year added his shot threat. Willy is predominately a sniper - a very good one but it’s really what he is about.

To me expecting either of these players to be something they are not is just a recipe for disappointment.

Last year I would have said you keep Willie, this summer I'd say you keep Marner.

Mostly because contracts matter in a cap world, and regardless of how much Willie can disappear and drive people nuts him and another 4 million dollar player will always at the least be in the conversation as a better option then Marner.

Pretty fantastic OT in the Memorial Cup. Just over 8 minutes of 3 on 3 before a goal was scored.

For me Marner is a special player that you just don't trade because you'll never win that deal. The Leafs had their best season in franchise history and were within one shot of beating Tampa, I think the idea that they have a holes all over the place they need to fill is an overreaction and would be a massive overcorrection. Which I expect is how they'll proceed, keep all their core guys, resign Campbell and find a way to deal with the backup situation.

There's always things nobody on here thinks of in the summer. Nobody said they should sign Bunting, Kase and Kampf. Nobody was like hey they should get Gio for a deep discount for two years. Everybody's big idea begins and ends with they must make a huge trade. I just don't see good teams trading away their best players when they are knocking on the door. It's a fan idea.

I hear ya man and agree that if you look at a deal in terms of whatever team gets the best player wins the deal - then Leafs will lose more than likely. I look at it in terms of teams needs and roster needs/depth.
Trading Marner would have the potential to fill needs the leafs have to take thy step. But that’s just my idea of a roster. I like the offence mix with grinder and energy players. In my opinion Leafs are too offence only and lack energy and physicality. I get that’s Dubas hockey but I just don’t like it or see it successful when you look at teams that tend to be successful. Who knows though.
By jo means do the Leafs need to blow up a roster or make 10 moves but that one big one to reinforce a good lineup is the ticket to me.

I watch a lot of players, including Marner. I just feel there are better players.
