Montreal also currently has little to no cap space.

Weber is on forever LTIR. They can probably shed Petry, maybe Gallagher.

Montreal went to the cup finals last year and the Pens haven’t left the first round since 2018.
Now don’t construe that as me thinking the Canadiens are contenders cause they aren’t. But neither are the Pens.

Taxes, probably, but there is no way he makes more in Pittsburgh than he makes in Montreal. If he wants money Montreal (team and city) will pay him.

As for the other stuff, yeah that’s all what Letang wants. He will be a hero in Montreal, likely their next captain if he signs.

His income tax rate on millions in Montreal will be a little over 50%....how about in Pittsburgh?

They traded Weber to Vegas. They took on Dadonov and his $5M+ cap hit for 2023.

Weber isn’t even on their team anymore. Try to keep up. Everybody thinks they can magically dump cap lol.

The tax discussion is way more convoluted so that’s really not an important point.

Convoluted for sure but still a big factor...not to mention the US dollar being stronger than the Canadian...this all strictly on the basis of making as much money as he can in his final career contract. There are a lot of other reasons he may or may not want to go there as well of course

They have good players they can trade if they need to find cap. What the don’t have is a 1D.

Unless it was completely about finishing careers in Pittsburgh and had nothing to do with money, neither of their agents would let them sign until after free agency. That would just be bad business. I still think Malkin will surely sign. Letangs more sought after and I think he has more drive to want to win another cup.

Yes but signing bonuses versus salary. Permanent residency status. Games taxes where they are played. Etc. there is a lot to it and any agency worth a poop basically makes taxes irrelevant in terms of contract negotiations.

Signing bonuses are income and still gonna get hit with that tax rate. If you live in Canada for more than 183 days you are a deemed resident and pay tax on your worldwide income at the bracket rate in which your income lands. I have no idea if the "games taxes where they are played" is true or not, first I ever heard tell of it but doesn't mean you're not right. The federal tax rates are identical from coast to coast but the provincial ones are all a bit different. The top federal tax rate for those earning over 216k is 33% and I just looked up Québec's, their top tax rate is 25.75% for anyone making over 109k....so the tax rate for anyone making millions in Quebec is 58.75%...maybe he goes to Quebec for the 58% tax rate to match his jersey number hahah

Your very last sentence could very well be true though... but maybe not for the reasons you listed.

taxes are a huge consideration not only for athletes, investors, govt, etc...the more you make, the more you want to keep. It doesn't matter if u only make 6 figures or over 7..yes, i said 6 since thats what takes for a family of 4 not live in poverty ..

From an Oilersnation article:

**Now, keep in mind that the tax implications are mitigated a bit because when Tampa Bay players play a road game in Toronto or Ottawa, they pay that tax rate, but that is only on half their 41 games, and also depends on travel days etc. It isn’t exact as stated above, but it does illustrate the advantage Tampa Bay can have in getting their star players to take a lower cap hit, but still make as much money as other star players with a higher cap hit in different markets.***

So you do take home more dough with the same dollar amount contract in US than you do Canada...and also keep in mind that if he did play for Montreal there's two other Canadian teams, let alone their home games, in the division so more games in Canada than if he played for Pittsburgh.

EDIT: I posted that from just reading the quote. I have now looked at full article. Tax rates have gone up, this was in 2018, however a 9.5 mill had a 850k take home difference between Montreal and Pittsburgh..which is a big chunk of change. We are also not talking about sales taxes here either which make the cost of living much higher in Montreal as well. 14.975% sales tax on all applicable goods.

Don’t get me wrong. Canada is a poop show. There’s just a lot of ways to manipulate your taxes.

Yeah, there's a lot of descriptive info at the beginning.

Then you can click on a player, say Josh Anderson, and see he's paying a combined 53% taxes in Montreal. After taxes he clears 3.3M of his 7M salary. (Not including escrow, agent's fees, etc.)

Scroll down and see what his tax rate would be on other teams. He would net about 1M more with Tampa Bay or Florida.

Friedman reporting another team told him that the Pens and Letang aren’t far apart and there is a path to a deal … for whatever that’s worth
