Gauthier sounds like a normal Flyer selection....another college commit, 200 foot player and projection as a solid complementary player.

If it ain't broke....

- Glak18

Fletcher has said all along he wants to obtain top-end talent and the best way to obtain it is the draft. I thus expect the Flyers at 5 to use that selection, not trade it, on the most talented player available in the draft. I think trading down for yet another safe 200 foot player is not what this team needs and I honestly would be surprised if Fletcher trades the pick or goes safe.

It does? Does a doctor telling you there is a problem with your arm but can't tell you what specific part of your arm is causing the issue. It's the entire arm! With all of the medical and diagnostic medicine available.

You want details, great, they are not giving specifics, to bad. I would like them too, but they are telling us why he is out, they added a little detail as to “it’s everything”, are you looking for a breakdown by area? It is not possible they really don’t know how he will respond to stepping up his workout?

Like I said, I want more info, I think they could do a better job telling us but I do believe it is a variety of core injuries and it is difficult to commit to a specific return date. I don’t buy, his career is over and they are hiding it.

It makes sense, and answers the question you were asking, why trade Ellis for so little? Now we know why.
- jd250

Now we know why? I knew back when it was made in 7/21

IMO there is much more to this story.

Agree 100% that they cant diagnose and fix it; or maybe they did diagnose and it is the end of his career yet they don't want to say that at this stage. 9 months and no progress? Come on man as President Joe would day

- hello it's me 2050

They actually discussed he is on making progress, where he should be per doctors, that july he will step it up, he very could regress with more intense workouts, or he could move forward. I think it is a coin toss

No it's not that they aren't giving specifics. They can't because they don't have any to give. That is the point. 9 months in and they still can't give specifics.

Again, what is a variety of core injuries? I don't know where the disconnect is here. It is possible they don't know. That's what I'm saying! LOL. 9 months in and they still don't know anything.

I still want to know. When was the last time you heard that a player has a whole core injury? The first case in NHL history.

Even if he is able to come back one day, he probably will never be the same. That's pretty sad for him.

Once the core is shot, you're pretty much done. It is pretty sad for him. I don't want it to be the case for him but really it's the best case for the Flyers.

And he looked damn good next to Provy for that short stint. What a disaster.

Hexy playing hardball with Letang and Malkin, let’s see how this turns out. Really can’t see them leaving but who knows.

Cutter Gaither at 5

There isn’t a mock in the world that has him going top 12. Would be such a Flyers move.

This mock has him going at #6.

You may not be sure but I'm sure. According to the CBA, the team has final say on medical matters with players.
- MJL

Teams can't make players get procedures they don't want to get, but I doubt that's the situation. Not every medical issue can or should be fixed by surgery.

I mean, might not be a bad thing. He has the absolute highest pure upside of anybody in the draft. Rather take a chance on a forward like him than go for the safe pick like Cutter.

How can that be true if he was already injured in Nashville and they hid the injuries?

Guess the conspiracy theory needs some work to address the fact that Ellis looked great in training camp and in preseason, up until he got hurt.

Given that we now have confirmation of what a mess the Ellis situation is, I'm hoping the Flyers stay at 5 and get one of the top 2 Dmen. Seems like a no-brainer for me.

I understand that Dman may not be a plug & play guy from day 1 for this season, but it just seems necessary to try to get some potential high end talent back there asap. Flyers were counting on Ellis for what, the next 5 seasons? If he really can't play again (or play at a high level), then this isn't just about this season anyway. It's about addressing a gaping hole for years to come that we thought had been addressed last offseason

That was what the Eichel situation in Buffalo was all about. Eichel wanted one surgery and the team wanted another. The team has final say. A player can just refuse treatment and not play I guess if he wants to.

Khalid Keshavjee from The Win Column recently summed up the CBA rules on medical second opinions. At the end of the day, teams do, in fact, have the final say on what medical procedures a player must undergo if they have an NHL contract.

How many games did Ellis play his last season in Nashville?

There is no conspiracy. Ellis did not have a documented injury at the time of the trade and obviously could pass a physical. However, Poile and Nashville undoubtedly knew that Ellis was declining physically and was a risk with his contract. Most of the league also likely thought the same thing as a legit top pair RH defenseman only brought back the return that the Flyers gave Nashville. Cap situation league wide was also a factor.

With the 5th overall pick the Flyers select…. A complementary player. Yeah, that actually does sound spot on

So let me understand this … they knew Ellis was hurt, when did they trade for Ellis? Was it not mid July maybe? Was he not already into his summer workouts? Are we saying he was hurt and didn’t tell anyone? That the Preds knew he was hurt ?
